As part of other 'work' I am doing, I have reformed a list on WikiPedia of Operational Standard Gauge Heritage Railways in the UK (United Kingdom);  I have sorted them - first those which are (for definite) in GWR (Great Western Railway) franchise (or should I call that management) territory (+) , those of which are neighbours (,) and those which are far, far away or feel it (-).

Missing from the original list (should I include them) - Didcot Railway Centre, Crich Tramway Museum, Great Orme Tramway, Downpatrick and County Down Railway, Fort William to Mallaig ... all of which could argue for place, or feel hard done by for failing the criteria.

Buckingham railway centre has a short running line, as does Didcot.

Grahame, I think you could include the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway in your first GWR (Great Western Railway) group as that is its ethos, notwithstanding more modern diesel motive power and some guest stock. Its steam, coaches, stations and signalling are all GWR/WR. Granted, Princes Risborough North 'Box was a GWR Joint company build.

I decided to draw my first line at GWR franchise territory ... but a tough call; Chinnor still very much listed.   Like the Dean Forest Railway, and the Severn Valley, and a handful in Wales too, origins and heritage are pre-1948 GWR, but the nearest station to them - how you would logically get there - is not with a train operated by First Great Western Ltd [this week anyway] trading as Great Western Railway, nor via a station they operate.

Are these all standard gauge: Crich Tramway Museum, Great Orme Tramway, Downpatrick and County Down Railway? Does the Irish gauge count as standard?

Ah!   Just checked and Great Orme is 3'6" ... I left out the 5'3" Irish one.    I'm pretty sure that Crich is standard gaug.

Not sure if it counts, as its not on a legacy formation, but Beamish has a short running line at Std gauge plus a separate set of rails at the mining area

I don't think Fawley Hill is legacy formation either ... but I listed it.   I chose "heritage" rather than "preserved" in my title.

There are a number of locations - Beamish, Didcot, Shildon, Mangapps, for example where short rides on standard gauge may be on offer - but such a ride would not likely be the main purpose of the visit, and that's where I tried to draw the line.
