Rail programmes FRIDAY 1st May

Yesterday channel 25 at 13:00pm Trains that changed the World.

Channel five at 20:00pm Edinburgh to Inverness.

Yesterday channel 25 at 21:00pm Its about the Gold that the Germans tried to smuggle using train/s in the World War two period

I watched the channel 5 programme at 20-00 tonight.
Quite an interesting view of the Scottish Highlands, and some proper trains, including one in FGW^▸ livery.
Near the beginning we saw an HST^▸ departing with white lights at the rear ! minor error by driver ? or stock footage of a train ARRIVING with correct white lights at the front, shown backwards to simulate a departure ? You cant expect a TV producer to understand such fine points.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU^▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Part of the drivers job is to check lights, seen them do it many times. almost certainly, the media messing with reality.

Many years ago now, when I was commuting into Bristol from Nailsea, a Pacer approached the station with red lights displayed to the front. A semi-uniformed member of railway staff, who I assumed was also catching that train on his own way in to work, discreetly gestured to the train driver that his lights were not right. The driver promptly corrected them, with a nod of acknowledgement to his colleague on the platform as he passed. Wink

I watched the Highland line program and found a very high proportion of data about rail itself rather than the train being a link between "see the country / area" elements that dominated. Yes, I picked up one or two inaccuracies as well - par for the course on such programs, I'm afraid, and this program was no worse (perhaps a bit better) than most. Will be watching next week if I'm around ... oh ... wait ... I have no choice but be around.

The other slightly unfortunate continuity feature of the Highland line program was that all the interior and departure shots were of an HST^▸ still in old blue GW^▸ livery, all the shots of the "same" train on the move were of one in its new Scottish Inter City colours.

Having said that, it was nice to see this route getting some of the limelight on TV, which has rather been taken by the West Highland line.
