Old Severn Beach Service Pictures

I have been sent the following by Joe Patrick of FOSBR^▸ :

Experimental BRE-Leyland railbus R3 at Bristol Temple Meads on 11/03/1982, about to form the 1320 service to Severn Beach (link below.)

Someone was asking me the other day (help, whom?, why?) what happened to the original Leyland Pacer Railbus that was used for a time on the Severn Beach line. The from "upthread" are not available any longer under that URL (but then it is over ten years) but the video remains:

What became of it? Converted to broadgauge, it went to Northern Ireland - seen here at York Road, Belfast. Picture from "Albert Bridge" under a Creative Commons license - I note he does not want me to use it for political, commercial or campaigning purposes.

Built in 1981 by BREL^▸ at Derby, this experimental railbus was tested on BR where it was not a success. It was bought by NIR and re-gauged for use on the Coleraine – Portrush line. Too small to cope with the number of daytime passengers it was relegated to evening trains and then passed to the Civil Engineer’s Dept for inspection etc duties.

It is now preserved at Downpatrick Station.

The person chatting to you about the Leyland Railbus was me grahame. We'd got onto the subject of the Class 14x and their prototype predecessors after talking about the Conwy Valley Line closure and the Class 230 ex-LU conversions.
