I am ... experimenting ... with web server software that works out whether a site visitor is from a small or large screened device.  Rather than gloriously cobbling the forum, I'm using the MRUG» (Melksham Rail User Group - site) pages including "your connection", with a wide table on an tablet or laptop, and a narrower one on a phone.

Working OK for me ... http://www.mrug.org.uk/wsb.html example below, showing how my server has sent out different columns of data. However, I don't have a "one of each device supported lab here ... so can I ask members try out that URL for me and let me know via the poll how you get on?   Thanks!  (Please post or message if you have had a problem - letting me know what the device is. Thanks!)

Works fine on my phone - either landscape and portrait.

Also fine on my desktop PC - am I the only one who uses one these days?   Grin

Laptop is in my bag and I can't be bothered to take it out and power it up.

I only use a desktop PC for the forum, as up to now on my Android Samsung Galaxy (s) the forum comments have always been different sizes, so had to zoom, which then lost the overall sizing.  A right pain for me, so never used mobile; desktop only.

Will try mobile sometime this week as and when....

Looking good(ish) thus far - thanks, folks.  A dozen people have tried it out, 24 devices / categories, and it's worked for you all. Desktops fall into the same screen / software support category as laptops and (yes) they're working fine too.

This is an experiment - a toe in the water - with a technology for the forum into the future, to see if this is a system that can be used through there too.  MRUG» (Melksham Rail User Group - site) is a useful test site; for multiple reasons changes are quick and easy there - put in and if need be pulled back out if the thing falls over, but rather like trying a new recipe in the experiment kitchen as a food production plant prior to scaling it up to an industrial level.

The particular problem being overcome is that our forum (and MRUG stuff) is running on our web server, and requests from browsers do NOT include "my window / screen resolution is" data. They do usually include a client descriptor string - 1,180 different strings yesterday alone, and there's sometimes a pattern in those ... I have spent some time looking through tables of "this works for this type of browser" data.  I am not convinced that the solution I have is 100% robust yet - there have been some unusual spikes in server loads which I'm looking at today and there may be one or two requests from bots that are causing issues - so there may be more tuning today if I pinpoint why the spikes are happening.

Looking good - only one problem so far (the Lynx browser - rarely used these days) which I have fixed, and  around 30 reports of success from 15 members.  I am still watching search engine visibility to check I haven't "fogged" things and effected indexing and ranking - the Lynx issue may have effected them too.

Should now be all updated at http://www.mrug.org.uk/newcomer.html and http://melksh.am/trains ... good to see through trains to Gloucester and Sothampton Central starting again - even if (Amsterdam style) you have to change on the way back.
