To the north of the relief lines just east of the Huntley and Palmers tunnel are three goods vans hidden in the undergrowth of the embankment. These should become visible again as the greenery is thinning out. I always wonder whether they are still sat on track as some rails were certainly still laying in this yard in the 90's.

Well, the railways did have a reputation for losing things - sometimes permanently - or damaging them in transit. That was one reason so many customers were keen to switch to their own road vehicles. |

They seem to show up on google earth, the roof of the middle one looks to have caved in.
They are (unless you have seen their chassis and wheels?) probably grounded van bodies, originally for storage.

If I recall correctly, nearby there was an abandoned Warship and a Hymek for some time after the purge of the diesel hydraulics in the early 1970s. Is it time to start an urban myth about them still being in the vegetation waiting to be discovered?

No, it's not. They were moved to Box Tunnel in the mid 70s as partial replacement for the steam engines that were mothballed there. |

No, it's not. They were moved to Box Tunnel in the mid 70s as partial replacement for the steam engines that were mothballed there. The Warship and Hymek belonged to a preservation group, the abandoned waggons my have been used by the preservation group as stores / workshop The area was part of Reading Gas Works |
