Mick Cash's name has cropped up in 77 threads but, amazingly, never a thread of his own - quite remarkable for a man who's become so well known to us.

From Rail News

Quote
THE general secretary of Britain?s largest rail union is stepping down.

Mick Cash announced his decision after the RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers)?s Annual General Meeting, saying that certain groups had ?seized every opportunity to undermine and frustrate my efforts?.

Mr Cash had been on extended sick leave after suffering stress, and had only returned to work recently. Reports claim that there had been several clashes between Mr Cash and the union?s National Executive in recent times.

After yesterday?s AGM (Annual General Meeting) he said: 'It has been an absolute honour to be elected twice as RMT general secretary and I want to thank the rank and file membership of the union for their continuing loyalty and support.

'Unfortunately factional groupings within the union have seized every opportunity to undermine and frustrate my efforts to keep the organisation focused on delivering for our members regardless of the consequences.

'That campaign of harassment has come to a head at this AGM to the point that my authority has been systematically destroyed ‎to such an extent that I can no longer deliver the RMT rule book functions of the general secretary and have no option but to announce my retirement.'

Mr Cash has been general secretary of the RMT for six years, having been elected in September 2014 after the death of Bob Crow.

This will put off any other moderate from standing for his post - look out for a more left-leaning RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) and the trouble that usually goes with it....sad, the dinosaurs make progress again.

Bullying should not be permitted to hound someone out of a job they were elected to do.

MORE left leaning RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers)?

From the Morning Star

Quote
SENIOR official of powerful transport union RMT announced his intention today to stand in the election of its new general secretary.

Mick Lynch is currently assistant general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maitime and Transport Workers.
He is bidding to replace Mick Cash, who announced his retirement earlier this week, blaming a ?campaign of harassment? against him by ?factional groups within the union.?

Mr Lynch, who has been in RMT for 30 years, was blacklisted out of the construction industry earlier in his career for his trade-union activities.

In a message to RMT members he said: ?Our members and our communities face tremendous challenges in the period ahead, the greatest of which, apart from the health crisis itself, is preserving their jobs, pay, conditions and their health and safety in the workplace.

?We also have to guard against attacks by government and others in the transport services and energy sectors on which our members? jobs depend.

?The success of our union depends on maximum unity and focus across our organisation making sure that we concentrate on those challenges rather than turning in on ourselves.?

Steve Hedley, also assistant general secretary of the union, announced his candidacy earlier this week.

Mr Lynch's manifesto as reported feels light on suggestions of working with all other parties to strengthen and take forward public transport into a positive future through ongoing challenges of the attraction of private transport, coronavirus and climate change.  I would hope his platform for excellent terms, conditions, etc, is based on the rock of a thriving industry and not on the sands of getting left behind as the world changes.  For sure, we live in a world where so many people are in it for themselves, and so sadly there remains a need to take a firm and organised stance at times to protect.

I under stood Mick Lynch stood down from the assistant position in September? He?d been on sick for stress related reasons for a long time too

RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) assistant general secretary Mick Lynch has stepped down after accusing members of the union?s national executive of bullying and harassment.

Lynch, who has been acting general secretary while general secretary Mick Cash was off work with stress, will himself take time off work with stress.

He has been replaced by Steve Hedley, the union?s senior assistant general secretary, who was suspended by the union?s NEC» (National Exhibition Centre - about) in April after being accused of saying on social media that he would throw a party if Boris Johnson died of coronavirus. He is appealing against the decision.

In an email sent to members yesterday, Hedley wrote: ?You may have read an email today from Mick Lynch in which he resigned his position and where serious allegations were made.

?All allegations received by this Union will be investigated in a fair and transparent way and, if necessary, appropriate action taken. In the meantime, the NEC has restored me to the role of Senior Assistant General Secretary pending my appeal to the Annual General Meeting. I will therefore be stepping in to cover Brother Cash during his period of sickness.?

In his resignation letter, Mick Lynch wrote: ?As I perceive it, this Union is currently beset with seemingly intractable problems that have created an intolerable, toxic atmosphere which makes a good relationship between myself and the National Executive Committee impossible.

?I regard the current stance of the NEC as overbearing, harassing and bullying towards myself as an elected national officer and I am of the view that the same continued stance has caused the long-term illness of our elected General Secretary.

?The constant hounding of senior officers by the members of the NEC has made it impossible for the Union to be managed properly, efficiently or professionally in the way that established precedent, working arrangements, the rule book, AGM (Annual General Meeting) and previous NEC decisions have provided for.

?The stance and attitude of the NEC goes beyond their duties and responsibilities under the constitution of the Union and has had the effect of undermining the role of General Secretary itself and the individuals that have been carrying out the role.?

He went on to write: ?In 42 years as a trade union activist, I have never seen a union so divided as this one now ? dominated by petty squabbling over matters that are not important to the mass membership.

?I now consider it best for me to take some time off work due to stress related ill-health created by this situation in order to recover and consider my future with the Union.?

In his email to members, Steve Hedley concluded: ?At this time of unprecedented attacks on our union with the threat of mass redundancies looming, the need for unity has never been greater. All the National Executive, officers and I are calling for every one of us to come together, putting personal differences aside, to defend our members? pay, terms conditions and jobs against the coming onslaught.

?Our motto as a union is ?Unity is strength? and we must now make this phrase a rallying cry and turn it into action to oppose the attacks coming our way in all the industries that we organise in. Our members need a strong and united union, together we must provide it.?

The subject of metal health is something the rail industry takes seriously, both the senior management and Union leaders have worked closely to provide awareness and support to all in the industry; whether employee, contractor or agency.

John Halsall Regional Director of NR» (Network Rail - home page) Southern Region has recently conducted an interview / discussion with Mick Cash as part of the industries Wellbeing Week, I've yet to watch it, but is on my to do list next week.

I am not a Union member, I wish Mick a speedy recovery from this hidden and debilitating illness
