Bow Street Station opened today!   https://www.facebook.com/paul.hinge.3/posts/10158967431894771

On the former Cambrian / Great Western Central Wales line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth , between Aberystwyth and Borth.

Long Article from the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-55937512

Quote
The £8m project to reopen the station on the Cambrian Line that connects Aberystwyth and Pwllheli to Birmingham and Shrewsbury has been 11 years in the making.

Quote
Welsh ministers and rail bosses hope it is the first of many stations around Wales that are being considered to improve public transport infrastructure.

A project to reopen St Clears station in Carmarthenshire has secured £4.7m of UK (United Kingdom) government funding while the Welsh Government wants UK government cash help to build stations at Carno in Powys, Deeside Parkway in Flintshire and Ely Mill in Cardiff.

A privately funded £30m Cardiff Parkway station at St Mellons has also been backed by ministers in Wales.

Four more stations - three in Newport and one at Magor in Monmouthshire - have also been recommended by a Welsh Government-backed commission looking to alleviate congestion on the M4 following the scrapping of a new £1.6bn motorway south of Newport.

Quote
Pre-Covid estimates made for the Welsh Government suggested Bow Street station would "generate" 30,000 annual trips and take nearly 466,000 vehicle miles (750,000km) off the local road network a year - helping reduce carbon emissions and congestion and parking issues in nearby Aberystwyth.

"The benefit for the amount of money invested here was higher here than anywhere else," said Mr Price.

With its 70-space car park, bike shelter and 110-yard (100m) platform, the idea is for the station to be a local travel hub to take the pressure off the seaside and busy university town of Aberystwyth less than four miles away.

"Especially at rush hour and peak tourist season traffic is a problem," said Aberystwyth Business Club chairman John Glasby.

"Especially in a tight, cramped town with only two ways in and out - so hopefully a new park-and-ride station on the edge of town might alleviate that pressure on infrastructure and boost local trade.

"The estimate is if you invest £8m on local public transport infrastructure, the local economic benefit is three times that - so in this case about £24m."

Quote
Some people in the village have previously said they would continue to use the regular and quick bus service to Aberystwyth.

Mr Jones said he had renovated the house but fears “no-one will buy it as family home now”.

grahame to the rescue?

I fancy the idea of retiring to a cottage in the countryside - to an old station that's perhaps disused but has trains passing by occasionally, or is open and used by a smattering of passengers.

Quote
“It is hell,” Mr Jones said.

“At 5.15am the first train comes in and wakes me up with the beep beep of the doors and the engines.

Perhaps not then!

It has been pointed out that the house is right on the main road and next door to a builders merchant so it was probably not a rural oasis before the station.

Well at least the aggrieved homeowner wont be troubled by newts or bats as these creatures are rendered locally extinct by railways.
If the line is ever electrified then exploding pigeons will be a new problem.

AFAIK (as far as I know) no one has yet mentioned a cow ?

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Is Bow Street anywhere near to Bow Road?   Sound quite the party place for Mr Jones ((here))

Quote
An illegal Saturday night "mad rave" packed with 100 revellers in a derelict railway arch in Bow breaching Covid emergency regulations was raided by police who arrested 20 revellers.

Officers were called to Tidworth Road, off Bow Road, at 1.30am where a bricked up arch under  the Fenchurch Street railway had been broken into and wooden crates used to build an improvised liquor bar.

An old argument against railways and the smoke breathing, fire snorting iron monsters that inhabit them, was that cows would yield sour milk, or none.
As well as the extinction of horses, the destruction of crops, and other disasters too terrible to contemplate.

With about  one train every two hours in each direction its hardly Clapham Junction!

It's every 2 hours at the moment - plans have been to move it up to hourly and extra have been building up - last summer (before services were abandoned due to Covid) the only xx:21 (ish) gaps into Aberystwyth between 05:21 nd 23:21 were at  10:21, 14:21 and 16:21.

But - looking at another thread and long distance community for just one or two days a week. Live in Bow Street, office in Central Birmingham. Roll out of bed when awoken by the 05:14 and get on the train the other way at 05:33 - into the office for a full day ... 18:10 back from Birmingham and back by 21:10.

And now there's light pollution at Dovey Junction - from the Powys County Times

Quote
OPINION – Dyfi Bridge Railway Junction is lit up like Blackpool Tower

[snip]

I’m referring to the Dyfi Bridge Junction platform, which is long enough to accommodate eight carriages, never seen on this line.

It is a carbuncle and a white elephant in itself as anyone changing trains is supposed to do so in Machynlleth.

My opinion - he who's opinion is presented (? or is it "she" - name is "Staff Reporter" and I'm not sure if 'Staff' is a boy's or girl's name) would do better to get the name of the station correct, and to learn that you change there as you travel from Aberystwyth to Abermaw.

Reading the article, it becomes apparent that the writer is actually a local farmer. "Staff Reporter" is a traditional journalistic tool used to grant anonymity to contributors who do not wish to be named.

As an aside, grahame could experience the light show experience in Dovey daily, AND finally end that search for his railway retirement home by buying his very own farm just 1 mile away from Dovey Junction!

Not sure whether "Staff Reporter" is the seller though...

9.5 Acres is a bit much for us ... and whilst I grant you that passenger numbers at Dovey Junction are reported at around 4,500 per annum (rather more that the 3,000 that the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) told me for Melksham when I first enquired how busy the line was), I think it would be a tough call to get passenger numbers like we have in Melksham.   "Travel to Swindon for shopping or to work" has bigger mass transport potential than "come to Dovey Junction to see the Ospreys".

Dont be too hasty, grahame...Remember you recently got that electric bike, and Transport for Wales do a sterling job of talking up the new cycling facilities at Dovey Junction here.

With Active Travel now all the rage, Dovey Junction's star has never shone so bright.

Oh wait...
