I note that Bath's Clean Air Zone comes in tomorrow.  A post on the Faresaver Bus Enthusiast's Facebook page of one of their big double deckers that "will no longer be allowed in after today".  Notification of a route change on the Libra Travel 94 from Trowbridge into Bath as they're changing to a different vehicle for a time which will be unsuitable for some of the roads their services uses; new vehicle to suite roads and CAZ (Clean Air Zone) on order, but delayed.

I was amused to see a story in what passes for a local paper these days that some chap from Bath was going to do his shopping in Bristol from now on... COVID rules aside, I wish him well!

Various A46-A36 links, avoiding Cleveland Bridge in various ways, have been discussed since the 70s to my knowledge. Probably before that, but I wasn't around to hear of them.

An update - http://grahamellis.uk/blog169.html - now that the Cleveland Bridge is to be closed to all road traffic except the emergency services for at least 3 months.

In view of the age and condition of the bridge, perhaps it should be closed permanently except for cycles, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles.
Or perhaps allow electric cars ? And yes I know that electric cars weigh about the same as fuel burning ones, but the number of cars and therefore the total loading and wear on the bridge would be reduced.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Has the Bridge at Melksham been thoroughly inspected recently? Might that need urgent maintenance as well?  Shocked

Interesting thought ... but it was majorly worked on last year. That caused traffic chaos in the town, with traffic only allowed in one direction for a period of months.  We did not, however, divert traffic away though Bath or anywhere else.

Some shocking news - it could be longer ... - from Somerset Live

Am I a cynic to suggest that there may be no great push to minimise any delays

But that's a structural steelwork contractor and I don't think that Cleveland Bridge (company) have been working on Cleveland Bridge (in Bath).
