Fresh calls for transport chiefs to build a new Bristol train stationPeople living in Lockleaze have kickstarted a fresh campaign to get a new train station built in their area - and they already have the backing of transport chiefs in the city.
Lockleaze residents met local councillor Heather Mack and Bristol city council’s new cabinet member for transport, Don Alexander, and urged them to consider a fresh location for the proposed platforms.
The main railway line between Temple Meads and Parkway, the Severn Tunnel and the north runs right past Lockleaze, and residents say the massive boom in housing developments taking place in that part of north Bristol should be backed by a station for the area.
A plan for a station at Lockleaze has been proposed before - by Bristol City Council back in 2015.
But it was planned for a site behind a builders yard, and failed a ‘business case test’, and now a renewed campaign from local residents in Lockleaze is proposing a different, more accessible location at Constable Road, which is also on bus routes.
In March this year, Mayor Marvin Rees gave new hope that a station in Lockleaze could be possible - it was listed as one of six possible locations for new stations as part of the council and
WECA» 's mass transit system improvements.
Lockleaze has never had a station - the estate was built next to the railway in the 1950s, but a station was never included.
Lockleaze residents have been backed by campaigners from Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways (
FoSBR» ), who are campaigning for a rejuvenated suburban railway system around the city with more stations and more trains.
