Is it really 21 months since we started the Tuesday Club for members to meet at 16:00 on Tuesdays, online, around the virtual fire to chat through things rail.   At that time, we had lockdown and we were very new to all the restrictions and it was a really good opportunity for us to help support one another.  As things opened out, we switched from a weekly to a monthly meeting and now, even Omicron considered, seems a logical time to draw the club to a close.   One final meeting for anyone who wishes to attend - Tuesday 14th December at 16:00.

---OOO---

Graham Ellis is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

You might want to reconsider that grahame - Emerging thoughts are that government is going to go hell or high water to give people "the Christmas they didn't get last year", followed by a lockdown that could effectively last until Easter sees enough progress made of a Omicron-tweaked vaccine rollout.

Hope I am wrong, obviously, but I would keep going for now if I were you.

Yes, I'm hearing that transport operators in the London area are actively preparing for a New Year lockdown too - whether they are going by their own risk assessment, or a request from the DfT» (Department for Transport - about), I know not....

Do you have a source or citation for those "emerging thoughts" re: a 3 or 4 month lockdown?

(I might nip out and buy a couple of hundred toilet rolls!)

I'm afraid that I genuinely can't tell you my exact source, just as I am sure that ChrisB - who is spot-on regarding the transport operator lockdown preparations going on behind the scenes - won't be revealing his exact sources either.

I will reveal exactly what it was my source told me though. They said that the optimal date based on the likely number of cases that lockdown should be implemented to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed is 18 December, but unless the figures are such that their hand is forced, the government will hold off until the New Year to "give the people their Christmas". It is felt that an Omicron-specific vaccine will be required to effectively combat the outbreak, and thus it is likely to take a number of months in total for first such a vaccine to be made available, and then for it to be rolled out sufficiently among the general population.

As I said, I hope I am wrong, and I was indeed out regarding the timing of the introduction of Covid passports in the UK (United Kingdom), so nothing is set in stone.

As I said, I hope I am wrong, and I was indeed out regarding the timing of the introduction of Covid passports in the UK (United Kingdom), so nothing is set in stone.

From The Metro:

Quote from: The Metro
Tough Covid restrictions could be needed until spring, scientists warn

New Covid restrictions, much like those previously enforced during the pandemic, could be in place until late March.

The government’s scientific advisors have modelled what effect different levels of restrictions would have in reducing the pressure on the NHS and the number of coronavirus deaths.

The modelling, by experts from Warwick University, considered a package of measures including a ban on indoor socialising between different households and a return to the rule of six outdoors, in line with the Step 2 restrictions in place in April in England.

A consensus paper published on Christmas Eve by the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, Operational sub-group (Spi-M-O) said ‘rapidly enacted Step 2 measures reduce the peak of hospital pressure to about half its level under Plan B only’.

The research looked at introducing Step 2 restrictions on either December 28 or New Year’s Day and keeping them in place until January 15, 28 or March 28.

It also included a model examining what impact ‘non-mandated behaviour change’ would have if it reduced mixing by half the amount that Step 2 would achieve.

The Spi-M-O summary of the Warwick modelling said: ‘A reduction in mixing equivalent to half that of Step 2 results in only a very small reduction in severe outcomes compared to Plan B alone.

‘Step 2 has a much larger effect, reducing the number of deaths up to 31st May by 39% (24-54%) if kept in place from December 28 until March 28, and 18% (12-27%) if kept in place until January 15.’

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Thank you, Lee ...

You are posting on the end of the Tuesday Club thread ... and following up with a forecast which, sadly, suggests we're not going to be out and about in 2022 like we were in 2019; rather it will have shades of 2020 and 2021.

But we are moving on - from the shock of the first wave of the Tsunami of covid some 20 months ago, and a into much more of a working and living with it scenario, and building a new future whether or not it is eradicated.  The Tuesday Club - with its social safety net - helped some of us stay in touch, get used to the new normal; we're still very much around and a social grouping, with an informal net between us all to help friends in need - or even in want, or in benefit from.

Moving on ... with wanting to look forward ... I started writing up a series of themes as to what I would like to see public transport "doing" or being into the future ... playing about on Christmas Day with, perhaps, an alphabet of themes, one per week shall we say, for the first six months of next year.   I know that will bring us back to Christmas just before high summer, but that will give us time to have a good break, promotion of what's appropriate through the high season for leisure and ready for an autumn of what it shall bring.

Now - take a look through these themes; some of them are pretty contrived and improvements would be welcome!

Ha ha, priceless! Casting me as the grouch -  I was actually going to post urging you not to be so negative about the future of buses, as you appear to be in your most recent postings both here and elsewhere. Yes, things do look a bit bleak, but I for one am determined to help put together the mother of Plan B's to ensure that our bus services do not fall off a cliff if the worst happens - Indeed, I was working right up to the end of the 24th messaging key players to put that package together - How's that for "Christmas Grouch" ??

Still, what would Christmas Day be without the traditional Christmas Day argument with people you consider family, eh?   Grin

Not so much an argument - more a discussion with varied inputs!

I have been looking to document what's been going on and where we are - with a view to drawing a line under it at Christmas and to move on, and up, from the new year.   Things can look very different from just a partial picture.   Upper - what came up on my screen on "Historic Trowbridge" a couple of hours ago.  Lower - what I saw when I visited the post full screen

Yesterday's announcements give proof, if it were needed, that nothing is indeed set in stone regarding the virus.  Let's hope the removal of 'Plan B' restrictions so soon after the new year proves to be the correct one.
