08:35 Swindon to Westbury due 09:23 will be cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.

Just two cancellations across GWR (Great Western Railway) land at the moment ... guess where!!

For the record, the rest of GWR-land is not as rosy as suggested, due to the industrial action by RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) staff at TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about). As usual, the communication of this could be better. Journeycheck contains the following paragraphs:
Quote
Alterations to services on all routes
Due to industrial action:
Train services running across the whole Great Western Railway network may be revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day on 19/11/22.
Customer Advice
-
Network Rail staff belonging to the RMT trade union at the Thames Valley Signal Centre (TVSC) have announced their intention to take industrial action on Saturday 19 November.
-
Train services operating through the Thames Valley between London Paddington and Bristol will be disrupted. All other areas of the GWR network will continue to operate as normal. Please check your journey before you travel.
-
Where train services are affected, a reduced service will operate between 07:30 and 18:30, and the last trains will be earlier than usual.

The paragraph I have italicised is misleading (putting it politely). For example, there are no services stopping at stations between Reading and Westbury, the service between Bristol and Westbury is halved, reduction in frequency on Severn Beach line...

As usual, the communication of this could be better. Journeycheck contains the following paragraphs:

Thank you for putting that in perspective - agreed that the train plan yesterday across the wider Thames Valley area was not what the TOC (Train Operating Company), Network Rail, and the people who work for both organisations have signed up to deliver to customers and their dispute within the industry rolled over to widely affect passengers yet again.  Further, the wording on JourneyCheck looks rather like Orwellian double-speak intended to precend all is in order, rather a surprise judging by the emails from GWR asking fora such as ours to help get the word out there; as this was/is not a national dispute, the lack of the "normal" services for customers was not highlighted as well as it has been for other strike in the national media machine.

Over and above the Didcot changes, my original point does remain that the only late cancellation, once again, is the Westbury to Swindon line which can ill-afford to loose any trains. There will NOT normally be another one along half an hour later on this line ...

06:11 Swindon to Southampton Central due 08:07 will be terminated at Salisbury.
It will no longer call at Romsey and Southampton Central.
This is due to a tree blocking the railway.

IMHO (in my humble opinion) a rather well written and informative message, with practical alternatives.   Congrats to the author.

Due to a tree blocking the railway between Salisbury and Romsey the line is blocked. Disruption is expected until 08:30 23/11.

Train services between Westbury and Portsmouth Harbour via Southampton Central may be delayed or revised.

Customer Advice

We're sorry for the delay to your journey.
-
A train has struck a tree between Salisbury and Romsey. The tree is blocking the line and some damage has been caused to the train. Network Rail have staff on their way to site to work on removing the tree and an engineer is on their way to inspect the damage to the train. Until both are moved we are unable to run trains between Salisbury and Romsey.
-
You can use your ticket with South Western Railway between Salisbury and Basingstoke and between Basingstoke and Southampton Central or Portsmouth Harbour, in both directions. Travelling via Basingstoke will extend your journey time by between an hour and an hour and 30 minutes, depending on connections.

We will update this message with more information when we have it.

Here we go again.

The 07:37 Westbury to Swindon left Westbury 15 minutes late, got to Chippenham 30 minutes late and their terminates - cancellation code M8 (what does that mean?) which knocks on to ...

08:45 Swindon to Westbury due 09:26

08:45 Swindon to Westbury due 09:26 will be cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.

It used to be the case in Wessex Trains days that trains said to be held together with sticky tape were being sent out from Westbury on the Swindon services in the hope that they would hold together long enough to make it there and back.  Could we once again have a situation where units are being selected on the basis of "this one should make it that far" ... there seems to be a very high failure per mile on this route.

Further Information

If you hold a valid single, return, or weekly ticket, you will be able to claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes or more. Please keep your ticket and visit GWR (Great Western Railway).com/DelayRepay

Whoever writes the customer advice for the Swindon to Westbury line could do well to look at the example for the Salisbury to Southampton service which was also cut short earlier this morning.

"Customers from Swindon and Chippenham to Trowbridge or Westbury should take the next available train to Bath Spa and change there.  Customers to Melksham should travel to Chippenham and ask the station staff there to arrange a taxi.  Customers at Melksham should ask for assistance in the Community Rail Partnership cafe just across from the station entrance"

cancellation code M8 (what does that mean?)

M8 applies to faults on passenger trains attributed to the operator, and is an "NES" one -
Quote
Other delays associated with technical faults above the solebar

"Other" means not covered by:
Quote
Delays associated with faults with the Pantograph, 3rd Rail shoe beam, ADD (Automatic Dropping Device) and PANCHEX activations
M1    (3rd Rail, Pantograph, ADD)

Delays associated with faults relating to train borne safety systems within the CAB (For ETCS (European Train Control System)/ ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System.) see Section ...)
M0 (zero)   (DSD (Driver's Safety Device), DVD, GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communications - Railway.), Horn, OTMR (On Train Monitoring Recorder), RETB (Radio Electronic Token Block), Speedo, Technical head or taillight failure)

Delays associated with faults with train doors and associated systems
M7    Crew doors,Gangway doors, Passenger doors, Toilet doors)

The items listed for M8 are: "Air conditioning, Cab heaters, Internal lighting, VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker - electrification), Toilets, Window faults (excl. those broken by external causes), Failed passenger facilities e.g. broken seating".

But then there are several codes for categories of causes not covered above, though some look as if they should be.

Customer Advice
We're sorry for the delay to your journey.
-
Earlier this morning a train struck a tree on the line between Salisbury and Romsey. The tree was blocking both lines but has now been cleared, however damage has been caused to the train and it is unable to move. We are able to run trains on the line between Salisbury and Romsey, but the line between Romsey and Salisbury will remain closed until the train can be moved.
-
You can use your ticket with South Western Railway between Salisbury and Basingstoke and between Basingstoke and Southampton Central or Portsmouth Harbour, in both directions. Travelling via Basingstoke will extend your journey time by between an hour and an hour and 30 minutes, depending on connections.
-
You can use your ticket with CrossCountry between Reading and Southampton Central, so if you are travelling between South Wales, Bristol or Bath Spa and the South Coast you can travel on GWR (Great Western Railway) services to Reading and change there for CrossCountry services to Southampton Central. The same applies if you are travelling from the South Coast to Bath Spa, Bristol or South Wales.

We will update this message with more information when we have it.

Cancellations to services between Westbury and Southampton Central
Following a tree blocking the railway earlier today between Westbury and Southampton Central all lines have now reopened.
Train services running through these stations are returning to normal but some services have been cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 18:00 23/11.
Customer Advice
A Network Rail train hit a tree earlier today, and suffered damage. In order to rescue the train, a new locomotive has attached to pull it away. However, this will be moved at a speed of 10mph, for a distance of 10 miles approx.

Trains are beginning to run again, but will still face delays. Some trains have displaced traincrew as a result of earlier cancellations, and are still subject to alterations.

We are sorry for any changes this brings to your journey today.
Train services are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice. You can use your GWR (Great Western Railway) ticket on South Western Railway trains between Salisbury & Basingstoke, and Basingstoke & Southampton/Portsmouth.

You can use your GWR ticket on CrossCountry trains between Reading & Southampton Central. Change at Reading for GWR trains to/from Bristol & Cardiff.

I’m surprised anyone has got time for such detail given the network wide issues today.  Great to see!

Very much so - and a higher quality report on the main London - Reading line

Quote
Customer Advice

The overhead wires near Slough have been damaged after a train reported striking an object caught in them early this morning.
-
This has resulted in the high speed main lines being closed, with all trains needing to use the slower relief lines as an alternative.
-
This has caused congestion between Reading & London, requiring us to implement a Contingency Train Plan.
-
Network Rail will perform repairs overnight (from 23:00), and train services will continue to be amended until the early hours of November 24. From 23:00, we will have 1 open line instead of the usual 4 - and some trains will need to be cancelled to avoid congestion.
