Sounds a good idea and at least a partial break from the generally accepted view that car traffic should be ever growing.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

It's like Christmas - fixed date and can fall any day of the week. In the UK▸ (United Kingdom) at least, Car Free Day is LESS successful than Christmas Day in keeping road traffic down ...

There was once a serious proposal to adopt a new calendar, whereby any fixed calendar date would always fall on the same day of the week. The "Eastman calendar" was one such.

Jan first would always be a Monday, with every other day following as they do now. The last day of the year would be a special day WITHOUT a day of the week. Call it "peace day" or something else suitable.
The last day of the year that DID» (Didcot Parkway - next trains) have a day of the week  would be a Sunday, followed by the peace day, with no day of the week. The next day would be Monday, first day of the new year.
In a leap year the last TWO days of the year would be special days with no day of the week.
