Job Description
WE ARE RECRUITING!

CAFÉ ASSISTANT
at Melksham Station Hub Café
minimum 10-20 hours per week worked flexibly
£9.00-£10.00 per hour depending on experience

This project is a wonderful opportunity to help develop this exciting community café project from its inception.

Melksham Hub Café is an initiative by the TransWilts Community Interest Company. It is a not-for-profit organisation, any surplus from the Melksham Hub will be invested in local community activities.

The café is serving rail passengers and local businesses whilst providing an outdoor community events space. There will be some weekend events using the facilities. A cycle rental scheme at the Hub means arriving and returning cyclists during the summer, when Sunday café opening will be needed.

The café has been opened since April and this role is to deputise for the café manager and to support the development of the facility for the benefit of the Melksham community.
The ideal person will have some previous experience of working or volunteering in a café, whilst wanting some part time employment with the ability to support at event weekends.  You will need an ability to work under your own initiative, work as part of a team and have an enthusiastic, can-do  approach.

Training will be available to address gaps in skills, experience and to develop the right individual.

We would welcome job share applicants with a minimum of 10 hours per week available (Monday to Saturday).

We have been fortunate enough to receive a good number of responses for this vacancy and are currently interviewing.
and it sounds like they are very close to the job spec - I look forward to seeing a somewhat lower turnover that there's been in the last year.  See also http://www.passenger.chat/25971 on our "Frequent Posters" area.

Hardly commutable from Reading, at any pay rate!

25 minutes Reading to Swindon
25 minutes Swindon to Melksham
10 minutes to change
-------
60 minute journey time.

Why not?

Oh -

* Trains don't run at the times they're needed and there are times where it looks as if they are designed not to connect.  For an 07:00 open, 06:45 arrival at The Hub .... So that's the 06:11 off Swindon, 06:36 into Melksham.  It would need a train at 05:40 from Reading, into Swindon at 06:05.  Problem is, there's no such train nor anything for a long time before

* Fares are complex and in many cases going to be excessive. Look at that return fare of £119!  Potential for the employer, as they're a CRP (Community Rail Partnership), to include a pass in the package.  And off peak, or a season if you can work 6 days one week and none the next may help. Or split ticketing. Flexiseason probably does very little good.

* Current reliability is such that it's really risky to trust it, and for a customer service role where a late arrival at work  would be a very serious matter, it makes the job impractical. The gap of over 2 hours from trains on the Melksham to Chippenham leg can be a real issue.  The staff at Chippenham are typically excellent at sorting out onward travel when things have gone wrong, but with arrival there perhaps 10 minutes after you found the Melksham  train cancelled from Swindon, take 10 minutes to get a taxi and a journey 10 minutes longer on road than rail ... half an hour late into Melksham at best.

To be honest I doubt you'd find too many people who'd willingly spend two hours a day commuting for a part time, minimum wage job, even with greatly reduced fares it would eat up far too much of their weekly pay.
