Statement from the MHR Board

The tragic events that are currently taking place in Ukraine have led the Watercress Line to consider whether to continue with plans to hold our annual 1940s event “War on the Line”. The MHR Board has looked very carefully at the issue and has decided that to proceed under the current circumstances would send a wholly inappropriate message to our customers and the wider public. We have therefore taken the decision to cancel these events until further notice. We appreciate that this will be disappointing to many, particularly as significant planning has already been carried out for the 2022 event. However, we strongly believe that this is the right thing to do for the railway and to continue with these events at the present time would be morally wrong.

I agree with the Watercress line.
This is not the time.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Perhaps the event could be replaced with a vintage vehicle rally.
The ODD vehicle could be a military one provided that the emphasis is very definitely vintage and not military.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway also has cancelled its "War in the Cotswolds" weekend on 23 - 24 April.

This had been planned to include the portrayal of "children are being evacuated, soldiers going back to barracks and aircrew heading off to airfields".

I agree with them also, this year and probably next year is not the time for any form of entertainment or leisure activity involving wars.
Respectful remembrance, and education in say the say the Imperial War museum, certainly, but not entertainment.
