"The West - but NOT trains in the West"

Not even The West - new cities in England - Doncaster, Milton Keynes and Colchester. And in the UK (United Kingdom) and dependencies also Wrexham, Douglas, Stanley, Bangor (the NI one) and Dunfermline.   Will it make any difference?  Will Bath (re)gain InterCity trains - though services to Colchester, Milton Keynes, Doncaster, Wrexham or Dunfermline?  Milton Keynes could actually happen ...

Or were you referring to the omission of a reference to a favourite beverage of one of our members?

Rather surprised to see Swindon omitted from the list. Did they not put in a bid?

Not sure - they HAVE put in a bid for the GBR (Great British Railways) HQ (Headquarters)

Swindon got nothing under BSIP / Bus Back Better either, along with other LTAs (Local Transport Authority) in the area, and there is a suggestion that some of the decisions are related to levelling up and supporting pride in what were towns and are now cities to help them encourage investment.

Swindon and Wiltshire (LEP» (Local Enterprise Partnership - about)) are also notable for being the only LEP that does not have a University on its patch (I have not verified this gem) so I suspect we could do with a bit of levelling up ourselves - especially as the minister for higher education is one of our MPs (Member of Parliament)!

No - there was some sort of consultation which IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly) people thought it a waste of money.

I do find it a bit worrying to hear local authority reps from the new cities saying how this will help attract new employers and the like. I'd be appalled if a potential employer was swayed by a place being called a city rather than factors such as having decent infrastructure and communications, a well-trained and motivated workforce available, decent architecture/scenery or just being a nice place to live and work. I think Swindon's got it right!
