From National Rail

Quote
Reduced CrossCountry service on some routes from 11:00 until the end of the day

Route(s) affected

Between Manchester Piccadilly / Birmingham New Street / Bristol Temple Meads and Paignton, between Manchester Piccadilly and Bournemouth and also between Nottingham / Birmingham New Street and Cardiff

Description

A shortage of train crew means fewer CrossCountry services are able to run on some routes from 11:00.
Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice

The following routes are affected:

Manchester Piccadilly / Birmingham New Street / Bristol Temple Meads and Paignton

Trains may be revised to terminate / start back at Bristol Temple Meads.
You can use alternative CrossCountry services that run between Bristol Temple Meads and Newton Abbot. Ticket acceptance is in place with Great Western Railway to use their services between Newton Abbot and Paignton.
Passengers travelling to / from Weston-super-Mare, you can use your ticket on Great Western Railway services between Bristol Temple Meads and Weston-super-Mare.

Manchester Piccadilly and Bournemouth

Trains may be revised to terminate / start back at Reading.

Nottingham / Birmingham New Street and Cardiff

Trains may be cancelled or revised to terminate / start back at Birmingham New Street.
You can use alternative CrossCountry services that run between Birmingham New Street and Bristol Parkway. Ticket acceptance is in place with Great Western Railway to use their services between Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central.

Check before you travel:

You can check your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner

Compensation:

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.

Noting

You can use alternative CrossCountry services that run between Bristol Temple Meads and Newton Abbot. Ticket acceptance is in place with Great Western Railway to use their services between Newton Abbot and Paignton.

... to me that looks limited - a surprise that there is no ticket acceptance in place onto GWR (Great Western Railway) train south of W-s-m and north of Newton Abbot. With everyone under management contracts these days, shouldn't we be joined up enough to say "if your booked train is cancelled you may travel on the nearest before/after trains" no matter who operates them.

You can use alternative CrossCountry services that run between Birmingham New Street and Bristol Parkway. Ticket acceptance is in place with Great Western Railway to use their services between Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central.

... so no cross validity to TfW between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff either

Friday = very busy trains even if all services run normally. Many standing.

Hence no clearance on your suggested routes.
