Sign up via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/getting-bus-users-moving-a-vision-for-public-transport-tickets-451650136717?

Free event.Meeting is at 14:15 (UK (United Kingdom) time) via Zoom

Keynote speaker: Andrew Wickham, Managing Director Go South Coast

How will connectivity patterns change in the future and what role will public transport play?
What support do places/communities need to grow and change?
What are the community priorities and how can we work together to support them?
Where is the funding going to come from and how can we deliver more with less?
How can we collaborate to meet our shared objectives?

Guest Speakers: Option 24/7 and Somerset Bus Partnership, Graham Ellis, Lee Fletcher, & Peter Travis provide insight form theie experience to explain how Bus Back Better has enabled the development of passenger and stakeholder advocacy groups, and lay out the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Post-pandemic, travel patterns have changed, reliability has been hit by driver shortages, services have been cut, and costs have risen. Our bus services are in crisis, yet they are an integral part of our transport network and necessary part of life for communities across the region.
Where are the positive outcomes from a Bus Strategy and what could the future for passengers requiring bus services look like.

Keynote Speaker: Andrew Wickham

Andrew is the Managing Director of Go South Coast, one of the South’s largest bus operators. Go South Coast is the name behind a number of award-winning local bus brands, including morebus and Damory, which operate buses and coaches throughout Dorset. In addition to running buses, the company also operates a large vehicle refurbishment factory based in Eastleigh, which attracts clients from London and beyond.

Andrew re-joined Go South Coast as Managing Director in 2011. Before that, he was Managing Director at Plymouth Citybus. Prior to Plymouth, he was Operations Director at Go South Coast, a role he started in 2003. He has also held bus industry management roles in London and Sussex, where he started his career after graduating with a degree in Transport Operations & Planning from Aston University. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
As part of his current role, Andrew works closely with local authority officers and members across the area. He has led year-on-year passenger journey growth across the business, significant investment in new vehicles and high levels of customer satisfaction.

Good to see 46 people at Meeting ... for those of you who did not make it (and those who need a reminder) here are my notes - typed as I listened.

** Chris Irwin
Failure of market - 20% down since covid
Congestion issues
Financial crisis / cuts March 2023 expected
Driver Shortage
Residual fear?

Importance of bus priority measures - saving vehicle
link spatial and travel planning
Use of CIL

Looking for what we can do

** Andrew Wickham

Start -ve
In general decline since cars and TV 1950s
Started to reverse in 2000
Poole and Bomo fastest growth rate.
BUT Austerity plus Covid

Less community more leisure
90% back. 100% Soton
We co-operate e.g. Wilts, Stonehenge, Swindon, Employers, etc
BUT we could always do more.  Need enough people / buses out is priority

What should priorities be?
1. Climate change. COP27 underway. Need limited car use. Even electric cars not enough
2. Not exclude those who can't drive (inc elderly; get out)
but private co - saving social care costs if people can live at home
running a bus costs 4000 per week, 1000 per person in care home
(4k includes evening and weekend - top end cost)
3. Economy. Cost of congestion, access to employment,
shortage of people

Since 1986, most income is money. Power to support to LTA (Local Transport Authority) some do but not much
Expect to see more supported cuts
I want to see all commercial. BSOG (Bus Service Operators Grant ) and lots of other cuts
BBB and BSIP massive disappointment Only one got one in our area.
BSOG easy to administer / cheap to run
£2 fare cap??? 3 months in Jan Huh Funding. But 2 x PM change so not certain.
Insure it does not starve operators of money
Electric and hydrogen - nice but very expensive not viable without govt support

Biggest change needed - free urban from congestion. Lots buses only.
London - quicker is train sometimes.  Bus lanes may be cheap to paint.
Just needs political will.  Brighton and Oxford thriving on these
Faster services, fewer buses (vehicles) at same frequency
Planning use / land use - too much stacked on houses miles from transport.
Planning system needs overhaul.

"Simple, High Quality made Bomo/Poole much improved"
Soton - full effort to run, some co.s cut and have trouble rebuilding
Econ there doing well.

Transport ops not marketing - Plockton example

** Graham Ellis

I was so busy presenting that I didn't take notes of my own stuff.
Slide set at http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/O247_plus_SBP_20221111.pdf

** Peter Travis

BBB huge opportunity for us
43% decline
46% carbon from transport.
Bid £165 million

Zoom essential for partnership. Up to 100 people at recent meeting
Only Frome when we started. Now many others set up
Facebook - so many starts as protest. Yeovil, Wells, creates anger.
Aim is not protest. Partnership is.
Somerset spends 40% less that neighbours on bus support. 64% elected endorsed.

We are really worried at March 2023.
We can boost patronage. Don't know an industry that does it as badly!
First has decided not to print!
Info at bus stops not up to date - SO champions keep it up
Bus Stalls - 25 during catch the bus month

** Chris Irwin

Bottom up - community routed
Protest is trigger -> Campaign -> Partner
Value of clear articulated vision

-- Trouble --

We research - accurate. Peter for over a decade. We're well known. Trusted.

** Rachel / Devon
Enhanced Partnership. Speaking local bus organisations

** David R
Have money but short of drivers.
Andrew - good RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) relationship?
Looking to get anyone to come forward
Need wages up.

** Tony Reese - back now
Shattered by the growth. Zoom ran out of space!
Need to market!   Council sees just a cost
Can't see how long bus takes. People don't think.
Over and over ... people want timetables. Talk of promotion.
Protesters become campaigners. Do our homework and be trusted.

** Jon Harris (Gloucestershire CRP (Community Rail Partnership))
Accessibility and in planning process
Guide - how to plan for transport. ** ASK JOHN
Connecting new communities
Scope to ask for contributions. S106 for travel packs, GWR (Great Western Railway) helping where S106 can't
4 places so far, expanding. Rail big part also bus.
Community transport? Early in the phasing

** Ian Harrison
Transport Planners - concentration on peak and journey to work BUT looking at wide range of hours and journeys.
We should be pleased that people want different times of day
Need when and where wanted.  Give people choice of how many cars

** Keith Walton
Program of interchanges between bus and rail at stations.
Bridgwater and Taunton sorting out.
Signing between bus and rail stations
GWR and other grands

** Mick Leery
Asking Lee about separate CICs (Community Interest Company ), etc
Design at BWT stopped buses coming in
Lee - A. Packages of different funding.  Town Council funds, local business, streams of funding.  Issues Bath and Bristol - operational reasons why not. Transition via diesel, picking up HCT and First

** Chris Irwin
Importance of user engagement
Welfare - not only getting faster but isolation and loneliness / prematurely into care
and marketing to this concerned with

** Tony Reese - how do we fund these groups

I also saved the chat in which people were asked to share contact details, etc, in public:

15:44:25 From Robbie Bentley (She/Her) to Everyone:
Agreed Andrew. We need to develop infrastructure to support Electrification of buses. Most of the operators are not equipped to support Electric Adoption in the South West
15:47:49 From Nick Farthing to Everyone:
Agree wholeheartedly with Andrew's heartfelt comments-we need to get the decision makers (high level politicians) to understand what buses can deliver for their constituents and help operators deliver what they aspire to - thanks for sharing your thoughts
15:47:57 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
The planning system (NPPF) already says that about sustainability of sites. and requires contributions to transport if appropriate. The question is whether the planners enforce the advice.
15:50:17 From Nick Farthing to Everyone:
Apologies - I have to bow out for 15 minutes
15:50:40 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
Secondly therea are many other reasons we refuse planning consent, for example 'over development ofhte site', poor design, safety at entrances to the highways , greenbelt rules
15:51:31 From Jasper Selwyn to Everyone:
Two examples in Devizes: new greenfield estate just outside the town which was required to have a bus shelter and turning circle, but has never seen a bus; and new Health Centre on the edge of town which proudly advertised the size of its car park, and has a wholly inadequate bus service which has not been improved.
15:58:03 From Robbie Bentley (She/Her) to Everyone:
Bristol is following on from Bath which introduced a CAZ (Clean Air Zone) last year
15:58:47 From Robbie Bentley (She/Her) to Everyone:
   (CAZ - Clean Air Zone)
15:59:57 From Rosa Kell/NileBourne to Everyone:
rural Somerset has narrow road impossible to give buses priority routes
16:02:49 From Jon Harris to Everyone:
Gloucestershire Community Rail Partnership is running a Connecting New Communities project working with GWR and XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) Trains. This allows additional community events to stimulate modeshift and also access maps designed to promote all sustainable  modes. This is top up money to allow spending where section 106 can't. See https://www.gloucestershirecommunityrail.org/access-maps.
16:08:22 From John Scott to Everyone:
In Cornwall we have only one border, but we don't have many buses!
16:10:07 From Andrew Wickham to Everyone:
   Geneva's articulated trolleybuses are great!
16:10:46 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
Yes, but there is not much point in 'going over the top' as a political leader and the troops don
16:13:03 From Jasper Selwyn to Everyone:
Totally agree about Devizes, Graham.  At least we only have 3 bus companies now.  We have maps (a bit out of date) produced by voluntary sector on the Market Place bus stops, and we have been promised information screens.
16:27:11 From petertravis to Everyone:
Somerset Bus Partnership would invite anyone in Somerset interested in Somerset buses to make contact:
16:27:44 From Bryony Chetwode to Everyone:
And I hope any neighbouring areas will take tips from these groups
16:30:27 From Rachel to Everyone:
All really interesting - thank you.  We have only just formed our Enhanced Partnership in Devon (as of last week!) and are just setting up our BUS forum.
16:33:02 From Lee Fletcher to Everyone:
   Big Lemon info - thebiglemon.com
16:33:50 From Rachel to Everyone:
   Devon too!
16:34:15 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
There are plenty of new driverson the A367, but the work conditions are so awful
16:35:38 From Kit (Transition Tavistock) to Everyone:
Yes - in Tavistock area too many anecdotes circulating about people left waiting at bus stops due to cancelled services. As main route connects to main hospital and to station, this puts others off even trying.
16:35:55 From Bryony Chetwode to Everyone:
The positive approach is worth remarking upon.
16:36:49 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
Paulton Hospital is practically cut off now.
16:37:32 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
we need bus drivers in  Bristol
16:38:11 From Rachel to Everyone:
Although we aren't perfect by any means, we do try our best to publicise services in Devon! We still as a local authority provide printed timetables books, and are working on a combined roadside offer with Stagecoach.  Take a look at our website too : www.traveldevon.info
16:38:21 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
Great Bristol Bath and Somerset and Gloucestershire
16:38:35 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
   need bus driver
16:38:45 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
   Drivers
16:40:19 From Mike Keatinge Sherborne Abbey to Everyone:
Peter mentions timetables going out of date.  We desperately need consistancy instead of constant changes. People will not use a service in which they have no confidence.
16:40:46 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
Paulton hospital mayor Dan Norris wants to upgrade the178 services past the hospital not enough drivers so Abus and citistar operator the services
16:41:31 From Kit (Transition Tavistock) to Everyone:
Agree Devon CC does some good publicity. We've found timetable booklets shift well on stalls, though at this time of year sadly already out of date due to changes by providers. A key point is that while many people can find details online, they don't bother to look unless something prompts them to think that there is a bus going where they want to be. This is particularly so for those who up till now have jumped in a car automatically, but now - if bus pass age - could save £ by taking buses where available.
16:41:42 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
Gloucestershire council  is Cutting bus service in the Forest of Dean with stagecoach west and in cirencester
16:42:08 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
There is a 379 bus once an hour from Radstock. The 178 does not exist any more as far as I am aware, and you cannot get direct from Radstokck to Bristol
16:42:19 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
Gloucestershire county council is looking for new bus operators in Gloucestershire
16:43:04 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
councillor Philip Robinson is looking for bus operators in cirencester Lydney Cinderford
16:43:35 From David Redgewell to Everyone:
chepstow bus and coach station to lydney bus station 25 services
16:45:23 From Jasper Selwyn to Everyone:
Devizes library can give out bus timetables printed off from Traveline, but it seems to be a closely guarded secret.  No Tourist Information for some years now!
16:51:39 From Eleanor Jackson to Everyone:
   The 42 to the RUH?
16:52:44 From Robbie Bentley (She/Her) to Everyone:
To Clarify, Biglemon have moved in to replace the services previously ran by HCT's withdrawal from the Greater Bristol Area. The collapse meant that Mayor Dan Norris was able to utilise powers to implement this on short notice.
16:55:35 From Rachel to Everyone:
Hi Kit! we have just reprinted all of the books due to the extensive timetable changes Smiley
16:55:58 From Kit (Transition Tavistock) to Everyone:
   Delighted to hear that Rachel.
16:56:24 From Lucy to Everyone:
Eleanor currently The Big Lemon aren't taking over the 42 .
16:56:45 From David Redgewell to Everyone:

16:57:30 From Lee Fletcher to Everyone:
Yes, as I said earlier, WECA» (West of England Combined Authority - about) and The Big Lemon have worked together on replacing the services in Bristol and Bath, and representatives from Option 24/7 and Somerset Bus Partnership helped bring WECA and The Big Lemon together in order to achieve that.
