The predominant story is a warning of travel disruption and as I awake for 2023 I see no "we look forward to welcoming you on our trains this year" messages; if they are there, they are drowned out by immediate problems.

From GWR (Great Western Railway), looking to work as close to the "normal" timetable as they can

Quote
Cancellations to services on all routes
Due to a shortage of train crew:
Train services running across the whole Great Western Railway network have been cancelled or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice
.
Due to the combination of reduced staff availability, the ongoing industrial action and severely reduced contingency options, intending customers are advised to find alternative ways to make their journey today.
.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Please, only travel by train if absolutely necessary on Sunday 1 January.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
.
Trains will be very severely disrupted with a significantly reduced level of service throughout the day and there are likely to be further short notice alterations, cancellations and revisions to services. Some routes will experience consecutive train service cancellations / alterations. This will especially be the case on train services between London Paddington and the West Country (& return) and also along the Swindon - Melksham - Westbury route where we do not anticipate being able to operate any level of service. Kindly note that connections cannot be guaranteed and that it may not be possible to complete certain journeys today.
.
Those trains that do operate will be extremely busy. Online journey planners will be updated on a regular basis as alterations are input into the system so if you do have to travel on Sunday, we strongly advise you check your entire journey again prior to its commencement.
.
The supplier of our replacement road transport has advised us that being New Year's Day they are unable to procure vehicles to meet our needs and have reminded us that many local bus routes will themselves be operating to much reduced service levels. Our ability to offer contingency service provision in the vast majority of areas is remote so we are very unlikely to be able to offer any alternative road transport or supporting facilities.
.
If it assists in making your journey today GWR ticket holders may use CrossCountry services via any reasonable route but note that CrossCountry themselves are also having to amend their services.
.
We sincerely apologise for the significant disruption, and any changes this has brought to your travel plans today.
.
For information on refunds and delay repay compensation, please go to gwr.com/help-and-support/refunds-and-compensation.

Further Information

If you hold a valid single, return, or weekly ticket, you will be able to claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes or more. Please keep your ticket and visit GWR.com/DelayRepay

From SWR» (South Western Railway - about), scheduling a massively reduced timetable in the first place until 8th January

Cancellations to services at London Waterloo
Due to a member of traincrew being unavailable at London Waterloo:
What's Going On:
Train services running to and from this station will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
What We're Doing About It:
We have been informed of train crew is unavailable on various routes across our network. This resulted in cancellations to services until the end of the day.
For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.
We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey.
Further Information
If you would prefer to use local buses to continue your journey please check Traveline (http://www.traveline.info/) - South Western Railway tickets are not valid on local buses unless stated above.
Have you been delayed? Please see https://www.southwesternrailway.com/contact-and-help/refunds-and-compensation for our compensation policy.
If you would like to make a comment about your experience with us today, please call us on 0345 6000 650 (option 4) or see https://www.southwesternrailway.com/contact-and-help/contact-us for other ways to contact us.

Services from Cross Country, including 1st January

Travel Advice

To minimise the number of people disrupted while our amended timetables are finalised, we have suspended sales of tickets for strike dates.

On Saturday 31 December, services will start to shut down from 6pm, please check your entire journey and ensure you are able to complete your full journey before travelling.

Due to some other operators not providing direct services to and from London on Sunday 1 January, we urge you to only travel if absolutely necessary on our Manchester – West Midlands – Banbury – Reading route as our trains will be exceptionally busy.

Additionally, engineering work will affect some services on Sunday 1 and Monday 2 January, please check your entire journey before travelling and expect a longer than usual service. Services will be busier than usual.

Please note; due to Crosscountry being the only operator running north of Banbury our services are expected to be extremely busy until 8 January 2023.

Transport for Wales has no generic notice on their journey check, but 100 cancellations such as

Quote
14:29 Cardiff Central to Cheltenham Spa due 15:45
01/01/23 14:29 Cardiff Central to Cheltenham Spa due 15:45 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.
Further Information
Trafnidiaeth Cymru/Transport for Wales
If one of our trains runs late or is cancelled for any reason, and because of that you get to your destination station 15 minutes or more later than scheduled, you may be entitled to claim Delay Repay compensation. Please contact our customer relations team or pick up a form from your nearest ticket office. You can email us using: customer.relations@tfwrail.wales
All claims for compensation must be made within 28 days of completion of your journey.
