In the past (might be a little while ago now, but its now annoyed me too much), you were automatically subscribed to new posts on a topic that you started.

This is no longer the case, and to get these notifications, you have to go back into the topic & subscribe, after starting it. And that is a pain in the proverbial.

Can the default be switched to 'on' please?

I suspect this setting may have got changed - perhaps you got fed up with notifications on reply and switched it off, turning off notify on post too.
- Profile
- Notifications and Email
- Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.

One status change ... effects all posts thereafter until changed again

A report from another members suggests that we may have an issue with this setting not working - dating back just over 2 years (to November 2020) when I retired my old business server and transferred the Coffee Shop to a virtual host.  At the time, we had to step up to a more recent version of the database server we use, and that version is more recent that the open source PHP code that we use for the forum.  At the time, there was a handful of issues we had to resolve or accept to live with and it looks like this could be another such issue.   If so, the answer might have to be "tough, we need to live with it broken"; the investment of time (that I don't have) in fixing and testing would probably be substantial, and if it's taken 2 years to report it may be an irritant, but it's hardly a burning problem.  It will, though, remain in my mind so that as, when and if I do something on the forum that may have me working in this area, I may be able to do something to fix it.

While the global notification option appears to no longer work you can still subscribe to notifications for specific topics by clicking on NOTIFY in the thread.  Not quite so convenient but it is a work around.

Indeed, which is what I am doing already - a right pain to remember after starting a new topic, but ok, understood.

You can find out more about how this forum works [here] - that will link you to a copy of the forum agreement that you can read before you join, and tell you very much more about how we operate. We are an independent forum, provided and run by customers of Great Western Railway, for customers of Great Western Railway and we welcome railway professionals as members too, in either a personal or official capacity. As well as posting messages onto existing threads, and starting new subjects, members can communicate with each other through personal messages if they wish. And once members have made a certain number of posts, they will automatically be admitted to the "frequent posters club", where subjects not-for-public-domain are discussed; anything from the occasional rant to meetups we may be having ...
