Don't have any problem with extending the platform,but is there any reason?

Longer trains for the Barnstaple line or a stableing point for South west trains?

Turning back services so not to use one of the through platforms I read somewhere. However I cannor remember the source!

Possibly for the future Paddington to Exeter via Westbury semi fasts or Cross Country services
