Alterations to services between Bath Spa and Chippenham
Due to trespassers on the railway between Bath Spa and Chippenham the line is blocked.
Train services running through these stations may be delayed by up to 45 minutes or diverted. Disruption is expected until 13:00 24/03.

Customer Advice

We're sorry for journey disruption today.

We will update this message with more information when we have it.

.
Stagecoach bus route 55: Swindon (Bus Station) - Chippenham (Station) are conveying passengers between Chippenham and Swindon in both directions until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Great Western Railway rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

1. I notice that there's no ticket acceptance on the x31 Bath to Chippenham bus.   I know that a sudden influx of passengers bursts capacity on the x31, and that the service is painfully slow if taken all the way, but never the less ...

2. When Box tunnel was closed for almost-electrification, Bradford Junction reversal signalling was added, so it should be possible to maintain all station calls.  I note that reversal is hardly ever used ... I wonder why that is (and I'm very sad that the Bradford North Curve was no re-instated instead of the reversal there even though it was in the initial plans.

3. Once the Westbury - Swindon service is up to an appropriate (i.e. hourly) frequency,  a Swindon to Chippenham (direct) and Chippenham to Bath (change at Trowbridge) will be available whenever Thingley Junction to Bathampton Junction is closed.

Re point 2 - thought was given to diverting one of the affected trains via that route but one of the crew didn't sign it.

In respect of point 2, although the Bradford junction reversal was used during the Box tunnel works, is was actually provided during the Westbury area re-signalling in the 1980s

I note that reversal is hardly ever used ...

Having used a couple of trains that reversed there, things seemed to take forever so it might be the pffaff involved. +1 to the Bradford north to west curve and somewhere, with regards to that, I have a reply from GWR (Great Western Railway)'s predecessors dating from about 1991...
