Interesting to see the very early trains in 1967 and 1987 - presumably they were carrying newspapers?

Lots of nighttime and early morning services were provided mainly for mail but accommodated passengers

0415 DMU▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) loaded to the cantrails with mail sacks from Worcester to Evesham and Moreton in Marsh, anyone?  You'd be sitting next to mail sacks, probably.  Piled everywhere

There was an overnight (0115??) Bristol to Bradford that was a couple of creaky, grubby MkI coaches added to about 12 mail and parcels vans.  You just had to hope that the guy on the opposite side of the compartment hadn't brought a kebab with him, and didn't snore too much

The most famous one I can think of was an overnight York to Aberystwyth service

But, as the services were running, had motive power and crew, why not stick a couple of the abundant available coaches onto it and offer a service for the insomniac community?

Ah - I remember that. 18:58 from Aberysywyth, around 03:15 into York in time to connect to the Glasgow to Colchester service.

…and we talk about aspirations for a seven day railway today.  Back then we had a 24 hour a day railway.
