Can't find any mention of this, but prepared for  Embarrassed anyway....

I heard somewhere, that the seats in the FGW (First Great Western) Mk3s are designed to be more user friendly in a crash situation, hence the high backs.

Yes, that must have been it.  FGW (First Great Western) took lots of flak over seat design IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly), particularly after Ufton Nervet

A XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) memo said it went back for scheduled maintenance to ensure any initial problems could be ironed out.
