I see that buses replace trains between Plymouth and Liskeard for the next four Saturdays and Sundays.Anyone know the nature of the engineering work being done and where exactly.

Engineering works on Mehehiot Bridge. The up platform will be shut off for all of January will the works are taking place, down platform runs as normal during the weekdays.

Not many trains stop at Menheniot, it is the least used mainline station in Cornwall, and its a little way from the village of Menheniot itself.

Number of users have halved in the past 8 years, wouldnt be surprised if services had decreased with it!

Main work is relaying of the Gunnislake branch junction at St.Budeaux, then as mentioned Menheniot footbridge and attention to the station canopies at St.Germans.

Services to Gunnislake were running as normal yesterday, although there were some buses Plymouth - Liskeard.

Some stupidity with the travel announcements on Radio Cornwall today, apparantly Cross Country Trains were replaced by buses between Liskeard and Plymouth, FGW (First Great Western) were from St Budeaux to Plymouth only.

If they were closing Menheniot then why would they be spending a load on a brand new footbridge? Although Menheniot only has 4 trains per day in each direction, they are pretty conveniently timed, there is a train to get the kids to Devonport college in time for 0900 and one back from Devonport around 1600, the Plymouth commuters are dealt with by the same up train and two evening peak trains from Plymouth at 1706 and 1816, so although 4 trains seems sparse, at least the 4 trains are of use to someone, unlike Melksham!

As for Coombe, I don't think anyone would shed a tear if it were to be closed!

 Funnily enough I was looking at the advertising poster's today at Totnes.

 I notice NR» (Network Rail - home page)/FGW (First Great Western) now refer to it as 'Improvement works'.

 Perhaps the idea is not to make it sound so bad.
