Here's one for you...

As we all know* DMU is a Diesel Multiple Unit.

Therefore, why are trains such as the Class 153s referred to as DMUs when there is only one unit?

*This is a big assumption I know and so I apologise if you did not know prior to reading this what a DMU was and that I sounded patronising.

I expect it is called this because they can work in multiple - either with another 153 or another sprinter/Turbostar.

Also remember that the 153s all used to be 2 car 155s!

Exactly right - "multiple" refers to the fact that two or more units can be coupled and worked together, rather than referring to there being more than one car. Locomotives are also referred to as working "in multiple" if two are coupled together and driven from the same cab (rather than being driven separately).
