Hi!

You know those Blue info points you get at most unstaffed FGW (First Great Western) stations, and when you press them you hear a phone dialling then you hear some train info, what's the phone number?

Thanks,
Jim.

Dunno, but if it still has the key tone bleeps then you can record it and find out.

Well, as the first key tone dial appears to be 7 numbers, it is either a local call (ie no area code) or a closed network call.

Some mobile phones will make a call if played a key tone through the mouthpiece.

Question is: Why do you want to know the number for the origin of these automated announcements?

The number has been changed in the last few months or so, presumably over to a different system hence the change of voice. It used to be 0870 241 0415 and then the station's NLC (National Location Code). No idea what it is now.

Having this number stored on my phone was very useful for when I lived and caught the train from Worle and the info point there had a tendency to break down!

The voice of these help points has also changed to the same lady (Anne) who is currently at Paddington.

Was lucky as it changed just after i went on a mad recording session on the gunnislake branch, when i heard it could be changing!

All of them!

The help points used to be maintained by Arriva Trains Wales, but is now maintained by the new CIS (Customer Information System) fitting company "Telenet".

I emailed FGW (First Great Western) regarding the voice change and they replyed:

Quote
Thank your email of 29 June 2010 with regard to the automated help points at ex-Wessex stations. I can advise you that the help points were maintained by Arriva Trains Wales. This has recently changed to a company called Telenet.

I can advise you that any changes to the voices will be made by them, and they will make any amendments they deem necessary.

Any specific information on stations, or any changes to be made would be decided by Telenet, but not publicly advertised.

Is there any other TOCs (Train Operating Company) that have these points?

Arriva Trains Wales have them, they use the same number as what FGW (First Great Western) used, because ATW (Arriva Trains Wales (former TOC)) provided the service for FGW.

and also Southern have a similar thing, but its Phil/Celia and its per a platform, so they have 1 point on each platform with a different voice, its at most of their quieter stations including in London. They also play announcements too, so basically its a speaker, but on a wall and with a button to request information.

No Southerns help points dont ring up a number, its connected to the system itself. Abit like the Wessex and Arriva Trains Wales 'advanced' silver help points are. Although it only announces trains for the platform it is on.
