By the time I got back into National Rail today it wasn't offering me the ^53.80 option anymore..in fact it was at least double that.. And I didn't have that much time to spare.

In hindsight, maybe with them too, I needed to enter railcard type.. Although I certainly didn't do that the other day when it offered me that option..

No wonder people find it confusing.. Also... every time I've gone in to find out my fare options I've been offered different value fares. Huh

Maybe I'll just stick with Maidenhead to London in future.. That's nice and easy AND always the same price (apart from peak/off peak difference)...

Try the FGW (First Great Western) website next time.  It is powered by The Train Line (and works in exactly the same way), but doesn't charge any fees.

Also, the ^53.80 is just a "walk-up" fare.  So it would still cost the same if you bought the ticket on the day of travel (except without The Train Line's fees).

There are subtle differences on the different web pages. Could your railcard option already have been set since the last visit?

On some others (like NR» (Network Rail - home page) I think) you have to both select from a drop down and then 'add' it, a sort of two stage process...

It all went ok with the trip, despite me totally forgetting to take my booking reference to the station with me... The very helpful lady in the ticket office at Maidenhead managed to find my booking for me just using my credit card so all ok there..

The hour I had left to get from Paddington to St Pancras nearly wasn't enough.. After about half hour we'd got to Edgware road (so just one stop) and there wasn't much sign of us going anywhere anytime soon so we did have to take a cab since we were meeting people on the train at St Pancras..

Tickets were checked once on the way there (on the FCC (First Capital Connect) train) and once on the way back between Paddington and Ealing Broadway (which is the first time I can remember FGW (First Great Western) checking my tickets in a veery long time..

I just think it's good that we got all the way to Brighton and back for the same price of a London all zones travelcard each..
