Great news, we now have the station staffed from 6.30 to 9.30 each morning. I understand it's a 6 month trial.

The very cheery chap was there this morning with his broom sweeping away, and he told me that his other duties include helping passengers, checking that the screens are working correctly, and phoning through to FGW control during periods of perturbation to keep passengers informed.

Spot the omission? Apparently he's had a lot of feedback that what passengers would really like him to do is sell tickets, but apparently he's not been given the facilities to do that......

In the immortal words of Homer, Dohhhh!

I suspect he hasn't been trained how to use a TIS ... an Avantix wouldn't be too hard to learn though. I figured it out in about 10 minutes (and that includes XS fares, vacman Wink).

Apparently, in a very welcome development, our local cheery chap will be wielding an Avantix machine from Monday morning!  Wink Cheesy Grin

This is particularly welcome news, as there appears to be no immediate prospect of the trashed ticket machine on platform 2 being replaced.  Roll Eyes

Erm ... a slight update to my previous 'news' item:

Since my chat with a very friendly member of FGW staff on the platform at Nailsea last Thursday morning, some posters have appeared on the shelters, announcing that our 'local staff with an Avantix machine' facility will actually be going live from Wednesday 22 October.  Apparently, his training is continuing, so the station will be unmanned temporarily: 'FGW apologise for any inconvenience this may cause', etc.

To be fair, if we do get a chap with an Avantix machine, pending the eventual replacement of the ticket machine on platform 2 - that's a result, so I'm quite happy!  Cheesy
