Title: Standard Class ticket, First Class seat reservation ...
Post by: didcotdean on March 30, 2018, 11:36:44
Prompted by a circumstance described on twitter.

Two people travelling from Newport to South Wales. Standard class tickets, reserved seats in Coach D.

Turn up and the seats are there, but are in a first class section. (Not clear if these are marked as reserved or not.)

Train manager requires them each to pay £20 for weekend first (as it is a Bank Holiday).

Train already packed with little prospect of finding two standard seats together, or maybe even just the two.

GWRhelp advises them that they can claim compensation for no reserved seats ...

Quite clear what must have happened; it would have expected to be an HST at the time of reservation but is actually IET operated on the day of travel, and the seat numbers on the reservation just happens to be in the split class carriage in the "wrong" part. Quite possibly only a single 5-carriage unit, given the reported crowding.

Far too difficult just to offset the 'compensation' against 'weekend first' it seems.
