I agree, but am still surprised that the military authorities allowed this. I support HM forces and have no problem with such forces carrying weapons.

My old man, as a National Serviceman in the late 1950's, found himself in front of the RSM having been seen cycling home to his married accommodation, 5 miles from camp, with his Lee Enfield slung over his shoulder. It was always kept safe at night in the bedroom wardrobe!

Apparently it was a no - no even then for a soldier to carry a firearm off camp. From that day hence it stayed in the armoury until his very last parade - by which time they had changed rifle type - and the drill.  Shocked

I suspect that on parade - which I suspect all these Guardsmen are - things are different.

Some years ago there was a fatality on the fast lines at Cholsey station. Arriving to find the all of the police and railway responders on site and a very somber mood, there among the team with a prominent identifying reflective tabard was the Railway Chaplain.

I believe the town was acquired after the first significant disagreement, and German in that part of the country is the official one.

... and the on-train signs and announcements switched to Flemish.

I wonder if, when the train approaches the Belgian town of Eupen, the announcements all change to German.

Mighty Cholsey station with its five platforms! As many as Didcot Parkway - and more than either Swindon or Oxford  Grin

And with six tracks, it pips Twyford, Maidenhead, West Drayton and West Ealing.  Wink

Happy to pay for a BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) licence.

Having lived and worked around the world with generally chaotic TV (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) (Australia was by far the worst), I will gladly keep paying the licence fee if that keeps the mind-killing commercials off the screen.

Graham, If you visit me in my 'box when I am on duty, you will get the most hearty welcome, and I hope to be able to answer all of your questions keenly and enthusiastically. I have been visited by all sorts and often the most interesting and piercing questions come from the most unexpected (and unqualified) sources.
11  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Nottingham to Bristol TM open access service proposed on: April 04, 2025, 08:42:24
That woud certainly explain why the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) now refuses to countenance upgrading the Aylesbury Vale parkway to EWR (East West Railway (Oxford to Bedford), or possibly East Worthing station, depending on context) line then, if they can't allow trains via PRR (Princes Risborough) from EWR

Is that decision driven by capacity constraints on the single line from AYS to PRR?
12  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Changes to the Highway Code on: April 04, 2025, 08:34:11
just wondering if there any countries in the World that don't require a driving licence
Isle of Sark (Channel Islands).  Grin

I see from the link though, that horse carriage drivers need a licence on Sark. Something that you don't need in the rest of the British Isles.  Grin
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: [OTD] Senior Railcard launched 1st April 1975 on: April 02, 2025, 10:01:35
…. Our BR (British Rail(ways)) weekly pay packets were made up with £1 notes during the time the offer was running, who remembers being paid weekly cash in hand and £1 notes?

Brown envelope 3 by 4 inches, with top corner missing so notes ( incl. £1 note) could be counted and a cellophane window at the front so the coins could be identified and counted. Any problems, returned sealed envelope to pay clerk for a recount. Once the seal was broken, you owned any discrepancy.

You still have to clear through security, even with zero luggage/carry ons.

As I found out on a one day business trip some years ago from Leeds to Edinburgh. Having just a notebook and pen on me made me even more suspicious in their eyes, and I was given the full nine yards - security wise - both going there and returning in the evening.
