Maybe a turbo that doesn't even get started?

?  - I thought that Stepney was another Bluebell engine right from the start, and Wikipedia seems to confirm that.

Research suggests that the Minehead engine was No. 78 (Knowle) rather than No. 55 (Stepney)

You're right.  My memory isn't what it was.  Thank you

I see pictures of "Fenchurch" - a locomotive I associate with the Bluebell - hauling trains on the West Somerset Railway at present and she looks so out of place (and small).

Back in the early 1970s, Butlins at Minehead were having a clear out, and "Duchess of Hamilton" was donated to the NRM» (National Railway Museum, at York and Shildon - about) (and, in November 1975, became the final BR (British Rail(ways)) train movement on the branch, as she was towed away to Swindon by a Class 25) and the diminutive Stroudley "Terrier" "Stepney" was donated to the WSR.  There was a fanciful idea to return the loco to service, but that didn't happen.  She was used, in 1979, as a smoking prop for a BBC2 telly drama though, thanks to a smoke bomb from BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) special effects department, and a shove from another loco

So there is a precedent for a Terrier on the Minehead Branch

£5,000,000 pounds for a footbridge to replace the crossing

Eyewatering!

I hesitate to imagine how that cost is broken down, but it's not all going to be design, steelwork and labour

Makes £60Bn for 140 miles of HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) seem like a bargain

London and Ebbsfleet, under the English Channel, to Paris and other unspecified destination(s)

The ride-sharing firm has thrown its hat into the ring by offering its own cross-channel services from the UK (United Kingdom) to Paris and beyond.

Uber has signed a partnership with Gemini Trains to co-brand the services.

The locomotives won't just be departing from St Pancras in London, as they will also be stopping at Ebbsfleet International in Kent to offer more options for passengers around the UK.

The collaboration will be similar to the partnership that Uber currently has with Thames Clippers boats in London. In this case, the company brands the boats with their logo along the side, but they are operated by Thames Clipper.

Although customers can book tickets on the Uber app for Eurostar services, this is the first time that they can book and travel on an Uber-branded train.

The company started offering new modes of transport in the UK in 2023 as users are now able to book inter-city trains, coaches, Lime bikes, nationwide car rentals and even flights via the app.

Andrew Brem, general manager at Uber UK, said: "We've seen amazing momentum since we began launching new modes of transport in the UK, and this collaboration with Gemini Trains is our latest step in how we're helping people get to where they want to go."

Adrian Quine, CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Gemini, added: "Innovation and value are at the very heart of what we do, so it's really exciting to be teaming up with Uber, an instantly recognisable brand which has revolutionised the travel industry.

"Now passengers will be able to enjoy the same value and comfort on brand new 'cutting edge' trains at the touch of a button."

ITV West to celebrate 70 years of ITV,

had an item on the West Somerset railway from 1978 on the local news at 6pm on Friday 30 May 2025,enjoyable.

Was this the archive item about the 1978 blizzard?

Days I remember very well indeed.  When the WSR had the purpose of being a useful public transport link for the people of West Somerset, and remembered all those people who queued for hours at Minehead station a couple of years earlier to buy shares that they'd been told would bring their Taunton trains back

The blizzard that very nearly killed me at the age of not yet 23

10  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: North Cotswold line delays and cancellations - 2025 on: May 29, 2025, 10:45:27
Meanwhile, a technical question about signalling on our line.

Yesterday (Wed May 28), I was on the 15:52 back from Paddington. We left Oxford +48, but then sat at Wolvercote for 13 minutes. Looking at OpenTrainTimes, this seemed to be waiting for the halts train, in front of us, to get out of the single track section at Charlbury. We also sat at Ascott, waiting for it to reach Moreton.

Now, looking at OpenTrainTimes, there appear to be intermediate signals on the Wolvercote - Charlbury section. My question is this : why could we not have followed the halts train through the suingle track section? We would still have had to wait at Ascott, but at least we'd have got passengers to Hanborough and Charlbury.

As it was, we got to Charlbury +64 and to Moreton +75.

I don't think there are any intermediate signals on the Wolvercote - Ascott-under-Wychwood single line.  So, heading downwards, a second train cannot leave Wolvercote until a preceding one has cleared Ascott-under-Wychwood and the section is clear

Not sure of the location of this bridge

Somewhere between Moreton in Marsh and Evesham perhaps

1P04 1318 Hereford to London Paddington departed Evesham at 1436, just one minute down, so the problem may have cleared now

Efforts to improve Somerset's rail services have hit a snag after the government refused to fund better connections to the county's main heritage line.

 [SNIP]

in the summer of 2019. Somerset Council and West Somerset Railway PLC jointly submitted a strategic outline business case (SOBC) to the Department for Transport (DfT» (Department for Transport - about)) in November 2024, asking for £137,000 to developer proposals for reopening the link between Taunton and Bishop's Lydeard.

£137,000 would hardly register on the amount of money the railway expends on consultations of all sorts.  This seems more like trying to head something off, preventing momentum, rather than actual stinginess over the cost of a report

The only HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) train running in this decade is an enormous gravy train

This nation has "complianced" herself into an incapability to run infrastructure projects.  See also Hinckley Point, etc.

A nation, once full of energy and zeal, that built railway lines all over the globe, is now unable to build a 140 mile railway between two of her great cities
