1  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2025 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: Today at 17:52:17

And for today ... the first train is replace by a bus because, as far as I can tell, the line is needed to run a more important West Country express that calls at Westbury, with engineering works closing the normal line through Pewsey.

I am not sure if that was the case.   The up train from Warminster is usually timed to be on the single line between 08:26 and 08:38.    Today the Penzance train was slightly early and was on the line between 09:02 and 09:14.

The return service from Swindon is usually between Thingley and Bradford Junctions from 09:27 and 09:38.

Now both re-instated.

Falklands seems so long ago but provided some of the most vivid memories of my journalistic career.

Seeing the Canberra sailing home up Southampton Water one Sunday morning surrounded by fire tugs.
Interviewing, at her invitation, the widow of Colonel H Jones
Working late into the night the evening the Sheffield went down.

Of course for others the memories are still painful now, both physically and emotionally.

My thoughts also go to the family of a friend of mine who died hours before the ceasefire.

None of them should be forgotten.

4  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: 30 cancellations on the North Downs this morning on: June 06, 2025, 09:41:24
Last Saturday the Weymouth service was operated by 166 207.  I believe all the 166s are based at St Philip’s Marsh.

Today that unit is currently heading from Bristol Temple Meads to Warminster before going to Gloucester.

After another round trip to Westbury and back and an outing to Weymouth, it will go to Bristol again before ending its day at Westbury.

Last Friday it was covering Cardiff/Portsmouths.

Whether it was first choice for last week’s Swindon-Weymouth or a last minute replacement, I don’t know.
5  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Penleigh Park Level Crossing (Westbury Avoiding Line) Closure Application. on: June 06, 2025, 09:16:51
More information about the crossing here.  Not sure how up to date it is.

17:35 Swindon to Westbury due 18:19 will be cancelled.
This is due to a fault with the signalling system

With the power to the signalling at Newbury restored, the latter pair above have now been re-instated.

8  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Is playing music on public transport "Chipping away at Society"? on: May 30, 2025, 07:51:39
It is covered in paragraph 7 of the Railway Byelaws

7. Music, sound, advertising and carrying on a trade

except with written permission from an operator no person on the railway shall, to the annoyance of any person:
sing or
use any instrument, article or equipment for the production or reproduction of sound

Don’t start me on mobile phone calls.  Increasingly you get people holding their phone flat, on loudspeaker and talking into the bottom of it as though they are on the Apprentice!

20:06 Westbury to Cheltenham Spa due 22:06

20:06 Westbury to Cheltenham Spa due 22:06 will be started from Swindon.
It will no longer call at Westbury, Trowbridge, Melksham and Chippenham.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

11  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Night Riviera Sleeper train - between Paddington and Penzance on: May 28, 2025, 13:44:36
Sleeper loco suffered a fuel leak.   Now been rescued by a Castle Class set and on its way, empty, to Long Rock in Penzance.

In the end it went to Laira, Plymouth, for repairs.   Due to head to Penzance this afternoon.

Cholsey certainly did have GWR (Great Western Railway) branding on the Up Relief platform in May 2019.

15  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway - ongoing discussion on: May 11, 2025, 20:08:03
It has not been unknown for a rail replacement bus to hit a low bridge so while not mandated it might be prudent to ensure drivers know the route before being thrown in to cover extra journeys.
