Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2025 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury
|
on: Today at 17:52:17

And for today ... the first train is replace by a bus because, as far as I can tell, the line is needed to run a more important West Country express that calls at Westbury, with engineering works closing the normal line through Pewsey.
I am not sure if that was the case. The up train from Warminster is usually timed to be on the single line between 08:26 and 08:38. Today the Penzance train was slightly early and was on the line between 09:02 and 09:14. The return service from Swindon is usually between Thingley and Bradford Junctions from 09:27 and 09:38.

All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: HMS Bristol: Last Falklands warship given send-off by veterans - 11 June 2025

Falklands seems so long ago but provided some of the most vivid memories of my journalistic career.
Seeing the Canberra sailing home up Southampton Water one Sunday morning surrounded by fire tugs. Interviewing, at her invitation, the widow of Colonel H Jones Working late into the night the evening the Sheffield went down.
Of course for others the memories are still painful now, both physically and emotionally.
My thoughts also go to the family of a friend of mine who died hours before the ceasefire.
None of them should be forgotten.

Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: 30 cancellations on the North Downs this morning

Last Saturday the Weymouth service was operated by 166 207. I believe all the 166s are based at St Philip’s Marsh.
Today that unit is currently heading from Bristol Temple Meads to Warminster before going to Gloucester.
After another round trip to Westbury and back and an outing to Weymouth, it will go to Bristol again before ending its day at Westbury.
Last Friday it was covering Cardiff/Portsmouths.
Whether it was first choice for last week’s Swindon-Weymouth or a last minute replacement, I don’t know.

It is covered in paragraph 7 of the Railway Byelaws 7. Music, sound, advertising and carrying on a trade
except with written permission from an operator no person on the railway shall, to the annoyance of any person: sing or use any instrument, article or equipment for the production or reproduction of sound Don’t start me on mobile phone calls. Increasingly you get people holding their phone flat, on loudspeaker and talking into the bottom of it as though they are on the Apprentice!
