1  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Bus Service 205 on: Yesterday at 12:30:07
As an occasional user of this service I was disappointed to learn that Paddington will no longer be served from 21 June, with buses being diverted from Baker Street to Marble Arch, replacing service 30. the 205 was a useful link from Paddington to Euston, St Pancras, Kings Cross and Liverpool Street stations, those journeys now requiring a change en-route. The only mainline terminal station served by a direct bus from Paddington is Victoria
2  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Re: Major rail disruption after blaze close to tracks between Newport and Cardiff on: May 14, 2025, 13:41:16
I was caught up  in this on Sunday 4th. i had to travel up to London and I arrived at Bristol Parkway to find it full of people going nowhere fast. As I am currently having problems with my legs I had booked passenger assist but my booked 1555 departure was cancelled. I contacted a member of staff who advised me to stay in the waiting room and the supervisor would contact me when he had finished trying to sort out taxis. When he found me he said he would collect me nearer departure time once the platform for the 1655 (starting from BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains)) had been confirmed. in the meantime regular announcements were being made about travel to south Wales explaining that there were difficulties sourcing replacement bus services because of the amount of engineering work in the area needing a significant number of replacement buses. the general mood among passengers was one of acceptance as they were being kept informed. anyway, about 20 minutes before my departure I was helped to my train and upgraded to first. The journey to  Paddington went well and I was met and taken to the taxi rank by buggy. I thought that the staff at Parkway did a magnificent job despite their small number.
Incidentally I received my delay repayment in my bank account on Monday.
3  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Closure of Bridport branch on: May 04, 2025, 11:56:03
It is worth noting that the Bridport branch closed 50 years ago on 5th May 1975
4  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2025 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: May 02, 2025, 12:36:32
Just knock the faulty vehicle out of the train and drop it onto the North Loop to await attention from C&W.  Nothing booked to run over that today.  Oh.  Wait.

I know, I know.  If only

Guessing on what's wrong with the train - but there IS a siding still at Thingley Junction.

Although the siding is not easily accessible from the Melksham line
5  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Railway History and related topics / Re: In memory of the Weymouth Harbour Tramway on the anniversary of last use on: May 02, 2025, 12:33:17
I have fond memories of the Tramway fro  my childhood days. A day trip to Weymouth always had to include watching the boat train pass along the streets. In those days it was hauled by tank engines with the locks changed just north of the main station with the addition of a banker up the bank to Bincombe box
6  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Re: Gloucester station needs an east-facing bay platform on: April 25, 2025, 15:09:10
The avoiding line is off the map.
The walk to platform 1 is very unattractive, especially in inclement weather. In addition the short canopy is badly located away from the point where trains stop

9  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: St Pancras plans for direct trains from UK to Germany - Feb 2025 on: February 23, 2025, 11:01:24
The problem is not just passport checking but the need to scan all luggage. I use Eurostar 4 or 6 times a year and the security check always takes far longer than passport control. I wonder if these checks are really necessary. The Gotthard base tunnel is longer that the Channel tunnel and checks are not considered necessary for that.

11  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Fare dodging fines imposed by Plymouth magistrates - February 2022 on: February 13, 2025, 11:56:25
Criminal court fines are not enforced through the County Courts. Enforcement of these is by threat of. or actual, imprisonment. If no attempt is made to pay an arrest warrant is issued, thus ensuring attendance at court

Back in the early 1980s we could only afford to have holidays during term time.  It was always for 1 week only and the schools were happy provided you filled out the required form.  One teacher I spoke to held the view that one week visiting another area, even in the UK (United Kingdom), was educational for the child.

The thought of 13 hours and 20 minutes on a pungent Voyager is somewhat daunting
