1  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Re: Gloucester station needs an east-facing bay platform on: April 25, 2025, 15:09:10
The avoiding line is off the map.
The walk to platform 1 is very unattractive, especially in inclement weather. In addition the short canopy is badly located away from the point where trains stop

4  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: St Pancras plans for direct trains from UK to Germany - Feb 2025 on: February 23, 2025, 11:01:24
The problem is not just passport checking but the need to scan all luggage. I use Eurostar 4 or 6 times a year and the security check always takes far longer than passport control. I wonder if these checks are really necessary. The Gotthard base tunnel is longer that the Channel tunnel and checks are not considered necessary for that.
5  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: How many countries have you visited? Used a train in? on: February 15, 2025, 10:05:25
14. UK (United Kingdom), Portugal, France, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, USA, Greece, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Russia. Germany

6  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Fare dodging fines imposed by Plymouth magistrates - February 2022 on: February 13, 2025, 11:56:25
Criminal court fines are not enforced through the County Courts. Enforcement of these is by threat of. or actual, imprisonment. If no attempt is made to pay an arrest warrant is issued, thus ensuring attendance at court

9  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Children going on holiday during school term time on: January 31, 2025, 15:44:36
Back in the early 1980s we could only afford to have holidays during term time.  It was always for 1 week only and the schools were happy provided you filled out the required form.  One teacher I spoke to held the view that one week visiting another area, even in the UK (United Kingdom), was educational for the child.
10  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Annoying / amusing use of completely irrelevant stock photos to illustrate press articles on: January 20, 2025, 15:01:16
The thought of 13 hours and 20 minutes on a pungent Voyager is somewhat daunting

How does the South Devon Railway relate to the Devon Valley Railway  Grin
Very distantly. About 400 miles. one in England, the other in Scotland
14  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: GWR Advance Purchase sale - January 2025 on: January 02, 2025, 11:46:21
Checked for my journeys to/from Paddington from BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) for my February trip to Switzerland. £21.00 sale fares available on my chosen trains but the return trip the cheapest was an advance with railcard at £15.95.
15  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Looking forward for the Coffee Shop into 2025 on: December 31, 2024, 13:22:16
Thank you for all your hard work over the weekend although I cannot understand the technology behind it all. It is a pleasure to see that the Coffee Shop has not been affected by "overrunning engineering work".
