49 minutes late from Gloucester - 1 minute *early* into Exeter St David's

That's probably a text book example of where removing stops is an excellent idea.  Not having to take the detour via Weston and a scheduled 11 mintue layover at Taunton all contributing the that dramatic delay recovery.

I have seen other examples where it has been completely pointless.  It's taken extra time to get passengers off the train that wanted the missed station(s) at the previous stop and the train has then followed something else, a freight for example, and not made up any time at all.

It's a bit of a guessing game.

It is amazing how quickly the phrase 'Book an Uber' took off amongst the young in London, so having them associated with a venture like might help it get over the line and finally offer some competition to Eurostar.
3  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway - ongoing discussion on: June 01, 2025, 15:14:57
Not just GWR (Great Western Railway) havjng the usual Sunday issues today...

From my own observations, Cross Country seem to be worse than GWR in terms of their percentage of cancellations on a typical Sunday.

Red/Green crossing lights will need to be installed presumably?
5  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: North Cotswold line delays and cancellations - 2025 on: May 29, 2025, 12:07:44
Yes, that's a logical interpretation.

2405/2418 are the distant signals (yellow or green only).
2406/2425 are the section signals.
2407/2416 are the signals protecting the junctions (and when a train has passed them it is clear of the section)
The two black boxes between Hanborough and 2418 are the axle counter sections (neither is associated directly with 2418)

I find it a little easier to intepret on SignalMaps than OTT (Open Train Times website, or possibly 'over the top', depending on context)https://signalmaps.co.uk/#cherval1:1658  You can also see when Ascott has requested a slot for the up direction - the 'AW2406 Release' lights up white.
6  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: North Cotswold line delays and cancellations - 2025 on: May 29, 2025, 11:23:14
There were delays from about 15:45-16:15 at Oxford after a freight was stopped for examination after reports of smoke coming from an axle.

Meanwhile, a technical question about signalling on our line.

Yesterday (Wed May 28), I was on the 15:52 back from Paddington. We left Oxford +48, but then sat at Wolvercote for 13 minutes. Looking at OpenTrainTimes, this seemed to be waiting for the halts train, in front of us, to get out of the single track section at Charlbury. We also sat at Ascott, waiting for it to reach Moreton.

Now, looking at OpenTrainTimes, there appear to be intermediate signals on the Wolvercote - Charlbury section. My question is this : why could we not have followed the halts train through the suingle track section? We would still have had to wait at Ascott, but at least we'd have got passengers to Hanborough and Charlbury.

I don't think there are any intermediate signals on the Wolvercote - Ascott-under-Wychwood single line.  So, heading downwards, a second train cannot leave Wolvercote until a preceding one has cleared Ascott-under-Wychwood and the section is clear

To add to Witham Bobby's post.  There are no intermediate signals, other than the colour light distant signals for the signals that protect the junctions at either end.  There is an intermediate axle counter section which splits the single line section into two parts, but that hasn't got any signals associated with it.

It's a bit different between Ascott and Moreton-In-Marsh as there are intermediate signals - for the level crossing at Bruern - and again between Moreton and Evesham for Blockley and Chipping Campden L/C's.  But these are only to protect the crossings, so trains can't go beyond the section signal of a given box until the train in front is within station limits of the signal box ahead.
7  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Northumberland Line to open on Sun 15 December on: May 27, 2025, 23:41:52
And I do wonder with EWR (East West Railway (Oxford to Bedford), or possibly East Worthing station, depending on context) whether 2 car trains are going to be big enough.

That's an easy one.  NO they won't be anywhere near long enough!

Managed to get up to the North East to take a look last week.

Very impressive passenger numbers with all trains I saw loading well, and, on average, better than the long established service to Cramlington and Morpeth.

One Ashington train I caught from Manors in the peak was full and standing to Newsham.  When you consider Northumberland Park (with Metro interchange), Blyth Bebside and Bedlington stations have yet to open, a 3/4 unit will be needed on many trains before long.

Speaking of the new stations, Blythe Bebside looked quite advanced, but the other two, especially Bedlington are still a long way off of opening.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s next summer for Bedlington.

At Ashington the eyesore building near the station was being demolished with a much more welcoming square to replace it.

All in all very impressive.  I’ll try and upload a few photos when I get chance.
9  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: South Western Railways Waterloo - Bristol services axed on: May 25, 2025, 08:00:19
GBR (Great British Railways) isn’t responsible for SWR» (South Western Railway - about).  The DfT» (Department for Transport - about) are.  And wasn’t it them that mandated their removal in the first place?

A fantastic idea to help celebrate this massively significant year for the railways, and the catalytic reaction it had on the country.
11  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: North Cotswold line delays and cancellations - 2025 on: May 17, 2025, 18:01:50
As you say, a journey of that length with three pieces of work is best described as "vulnerable".  But I would have expected the software to flag it as a potential issue. Alas, I'd fear that the report of the scheduling efficiency statistics wouldn't notice the shortness of the pieces - they'd be lost in any overall average.

Without checking I don't know for sure, but it's quite possible the TM (Train Manager, or Ticket Machine, or Temple Meads (Bristol), depending on context) assists on the way back, or that a Worcester based TM booking on standby could work it back.

Number 4 looks like the Isle Of Wight, so I'll have a guess at Cowes.  Wink
13  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: North Cotswold line delays and cancellations - 2025 on: May 17, 2025, 14:08:26
Though why any scheduling system would have three separate TMs (Train Manager, or Ticket Machine, or Temple Meads (Bristol), depending on context) (Paddington - Reading - Shrub Hill - Great Malvern) for a journey that is 2:22 long is beyond me.

Sadly that's what the computer churns out these days.  Works on paper, but not in practice as soon as anything goes wrong.  The powers that be, don't seem to get it unfortunately.
14  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Night Riviera Sleeper train - between Paddington and Penzance on: May 13, 2025, 08:51:25
Silly question - how many customers actually want to arrive in London before 07:00 anyway?

Not many.

In fact with delay repay I expect most would be pretty happy.

Not ideal for passengers joining at stations enroute of course, but hopefully they would all be understanding of the reason.
15  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: Go-Op Cooperative - proposals for additional rail services on: May 12, 2025, 13:08:00
Do not presume - there may be a "Plan B" - or perhaps a "Plan [later letter]" now as there have been a number of plan updates along the way, and I would not bet on this news being terminal when bad news has not been terminal for them in the past.

Other options being considered:

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/go-op-som-wilts-rail/updates/217508#start

Depends on how much you want to flog a dead horse I suppose.
