1  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Commuting daily from Newton Abbot or Exeter to London on: November 06, 2012, 16:42:26
You have to take into account getting to the station, to be within a walk/quick drive of Exeter or Newton Abbot stations you're going to have to live in an urban area, rather than a country setting (which is a lot of people's reason for living in Devon), Tiverton Parkway is in a country setting, and is nearer London than the other two, and is a practical choice for commuting into the capital.
2  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: George Osborne in 'first class ticket row' (BBC News) on: October 20, 2012, 22:51:59
With both a Treasury spokesperson and Virgin Trains saying essentially the same thing
It's not as if Virgin need to remain on good terms with the government at the moment though is it?  Wink

Damn, I was hoping that someone would pay for that attack, one of the buses destroyed in the fire was the only bus I've ever really had a proper affinity with  Tongue
4  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon - Central, North and South / Re: Dawlish Station to get new plastic footbridge in October on: September 28, 2012, 02:34:45
About time too, the condition of the current bridge has long been woeful, and it contributes to the rather shabby feel of the station.

Sounds like it will still have open sides too, so train and sea watching will still be possible from the bridge  Smiley
5  All across the Great Western territory / Diary - what's happening when? / Re: Unique opportunity to travel the Portbury Branch Line - Saturday 29 Sept 2012 on: September 27, 2012, 16:33:34
I should hopefully be on the 15:12 and the 16:09, if any forum members want to say hello (I'll definitely look out for the admins!) , I'll look like the picture I've (hopefully!) attached, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, black backpack, and with a smallish camera bag in front of my stomach, and possibly carrying a tripod..!

6  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Station and on board train announcements - merged topic, ongoing discussion on: September 27, 2012, 16:15:42
There are numerous problems with the new systems, although they do seem to have improved recently (or am I just used to them now?), the first mistake that springs to mind, is the pronunciation of "Plymouth" as "Plymuff"...  Shocked

I just don't think that "Anne's" voice (the new female voice) is really suited to railway announcements...
7  All across the Great Western territory / Diary - what's happening when? / Re: Unique opportunity to travel the Portbury Branch Line - Saturday 29 Sept 2012 on: September 05, 2012, 17:46:29
I've had a confirmation email for the 15:12, looks like I'm gonna be on that.
8  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Night Riviera sleeper service - Cornwall to London on: September 01, 2012, 16:43:23
Joined the up Cornish Riviera at Par. Standing room only from Bodmin, and no seat reservations valid. Could be an interesting run to London.

Perfect excuse for a long window leaning session  Wink

But why is this legal but little advertised scheme not made more public?

Well Mr BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) Reporter, because TOC (Train Operating Company)'s will lost out on a lot of revenue.

I'm not sure that splitting becoming wider public knowledge is a good thing, as the more prevalent it is, the more likely it is that TOC's will want to see it made harder/impossible.

It seems pretty obvious what the contents of this thread will be from the title, and you don't have to read every thread, methinks some people only clicked on this thread to insult the OP (Original Poster / topic starter, or Off Peak, depending on context).
13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with the down sleeper - 10/11 May 12 on: May 11, 2012, 16:36:36
So is the 57 still thought to be at Taunton?
14  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Driver Advisory System (DAS) now in use on: May 07, 2012, 22:57:13
The Volo screens only show the moving map for about a minute or so before going back to default so you'd need to be pretty keen to follow progress that way.

Not anymore! A message pops up and asks 'Is the screen still in use' You just tap the screen to remove this and the map remains.

Definitely a good thing!

Does anyone know where in the cab these new screen are situated?

That's one very busy platform, did they really all fit on the train?

Referring to a certain other thread, did the photographer ask everyones permission to be photographed I wonder?
