1  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Thames Valley infrastructure problems causing disruption elsewhere - 2025 on: March 10, 2025, 01:49:32
I’m on the 19:04 EL (Elizabeth Line - Transport for London line from Reading and Heathrow in the west through central tunnels across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.) train from TWY (Twyford station) (I’m going to Hayes) which left from P2 (which I was fortunate to aim for as according to RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) the previous one ran 13 minutes late and didn’t call there). This particular train is non-stopping Taplow and Burnham as indeed all EL trains are doing this evening with no advice that I’ve seen or heard so I don’t know what passengers to and from those stations are meant to do.

Burnham and Taplow was still able to be served by the Elizabeth line services that start/terminate at Maidenhead. It was only those to/from Reading that were unable to call.

* Three GWR (Great Western Railway)▸ stations which - though not terminii - you can only leave in one direction on a passenger train

Also Bedwyn no trains to destinations further down the line or from further down the line call there.

Although not frequent, Bedwyn has services from both directions.
6  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway - ongoing discussion on: November 23, 2024, 23:12:37
......here we go again! Another weekend......so.....

The message on Twitter/X makes specific reference to crew shortage.....and as seems usual now GWR (Great Western Railway) have turned off the ability to reply with any questions etc....Great customer service!

I agree with having replies turned off, means GWR can put their own updates to the thread if need be without it being flooded with responses that may not be relevant. Anybody that wants to ask them a question can obviously still do so in the usual way of using X.

Hi Mark, yes, Bristol/Bath going via B&H (Berks and Hants - railway line from Reading to Taunton via Westbury) to Reading.

Seems as though no trains stop at Didcot this Sunday....

Didcot becomes a terminus on Sunday. A quick check shows it will have GWR (Great Western Railway) train services for North and South Cotswolds and XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) train services to Manchester.

Buses will be running to Reading (XC and GWR) and Winchester (XC)
9  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: 10% off tickets via Uber on: October 16, 2024, 20:31:56
On the odd occasion I've claimed compensation for a ticket I've bought using the Virgin app, I use the GWR (Great Western Railway) website for my claim; as far as I know the fact I bought the ticket through Virgin doesn't come into it. Won't that still be the case if I buy through Uber?

For delays you would claim via delay repay of the train company that delayed you. For refunds because of a cancellation and no longer travelling, it goes via the point of purchase.

12  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Thames Valley infrastructure problems causing disruption elsewhere - 2024 on: January 12, 2024, 00:47:20
From what I recall the overheads weren't fully examined until later in the evening. I worked a service leaving Paddington at 20:00 and there was still a requirement to run in diesel as far as Southall to use the Down Main.
13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Travel advice 4th January onwards on: January 06, 2024, 00:18:11
I have more sympathy with "the railway" in conditions this bad. What annoys me is the endless disruption in only moderately adverse weather.
Considerable flooding near me, I am not directly affected as atop a small hill, but the odd power cut, and tesco home delivery much delayed.
The bit that I tend to wonder about when something goes awry in the Thames Valley is why route knowledge is not maintained via Greenford and Oxford. Yes, it would be slow, but it would give a realistic alternative route between Paddington and Swindon.

The main issue would be retention of route knowledge, so you'd need there to be scheduled services for GWR (Great Western Railway) drivers and TM (Train Manager, or Ticket Machine, or Temple Meads (Bristol), depending on context)'s/Guards in order to maintain the route competency.

Some folk were lucky. They had the beautiful Rachel Riley for company.

Others less so. They had James Blunt. Fortunately he didn't have his guitar with him.

That would give potential for an A Cappella performance, to some that may be even worse.
15  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: major disruption at Paddington after cables damage. on: December 08, 2023, 03:30:49
I think it was probably the only real option at the time. On previous occasions a Class 57 has been used for dragging the Class 345s and 387s away when there has been a failure of the overheads or there has been train to train evacuations. That wasn't an option this time because of the industrial action on GWR (Great Western Railway).

As it stands there is still going to be disruption in the morning, looking at Open Train Times there are a few units (2xHEX and 1xTfL) that still need to be moved, whether that be under their own power once it's switched back on or by being rescued I'm not sure as it'll depend on how the units have been left.

The relief line appears to be clear though, so the positive is that there should be some sort of service in the morning if Network Rail have been able to shorten the isolations of the overhead line without issue.
