1  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Cash payments for transport services on: Yesterday at 10:37:57
As a now ex bus driver, most of us hated cash!
Have to pay in the exact amount every night when your shift ends.
A large queue at the paying in machine many times.
On some very popular summer routes, a driver could easily pay in upwards of £500, frequently £750 plus.
Drivers didn't get paid overtime for paying in such amounts.
A few of us claimed!

Cancellations to services between Reading and Newbury
Due to a points failure between Reading and Newbury some lines are blocked.
Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled, delayed or diverted between Reading and Taunton. Some stations between Reading and Taunton will not be served. Disruption is expected until 13:15 29/04.

A few diverted trains resulting.

Head for Points have just done their review

https://www.headforpoints.com/2025/04/23/gwr-rewards/
Great Western Railway is trialling GWR (Great Western Railway) Rewards – and it’s far too generous
Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Great Western Railway is trialling a loyalty programme, GWR Rewards, in a new departure for the rail operator.

Unlike some rail loyalty schemes (I’m looking at you, LNER» (London North Eastern Railway - about), with your 2% cashback offering) this is generous.

Perhaps too generous, to be honest …. you may want to reap the benefits whilst you can.

6  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2025 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: April 25, 2025, 12:05:13
Journey check looking good today - flagging up just two cancellations across the whole GWR (Great Western Railway) area.   Guess where

Quote
12:17 Westbury to Swindon due 12:59
13:14 Swindon to Westbury due 13:57

13:14 Swindon to Westbury due 13:57 will be cancelled.
This is due to a safety inspection of the track.

OK - so I notice a day when we are the only cancellations ... but this is not a unique occurrence!
Cancellations to services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham
Due to a safety inspection of the track at Pewsey the line towards Reading is closed. Disruption is expected until 13:00 25/04.
Train services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham have been cancelled.
Customer Advice
Due to a safety inspection of the track, all train services between Westbury, Melksham and Swindon are cancelled.

Customers travelling between Westbury, Trowbridge, Chippenham and Swindon are advised to change at Bath Spa.

Melksham is not being served by trains for the time being. Road transport is being organised.

((A section of track between Westbury and Pewsey is being examined for a possible defect. As a precaution we are not currently running trains along this stretch. This affects services to London Paddington from Devon and Cornwall. Where possible trains will divert, taking an alternative, slightly longer route. Where this is not possible, train services may be terminated at short notice.))

Would Melksham station be long enough to have a "Penryn-style" passing platform loop?
Just a thought!

9  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Eyesight rules for motorists unsafe, says coroner on: April 20, 2025, 10:33:16
I've always said anyone over 70 must have an annual eye test, and that result must be available for the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) to see.
Possibly a simple re-test every two years for driving ability as well.

Professional wagon and bus drivers need an annual eye test and medical over 70 years of age, so car drivers should have similar.

7. Heading for Kingswear from Bridge Halt (now removed?).
Paignton to Kingswear.
Dartmouth used to have a ticket and luggage office, but no trains of course.
Used to alight from Churston school at Bridge Halt many years ago.

Returning to Plymouth for a moment, if I may?

God's own City!

Hope you enjoyed Plymouth!

My home city, too.

From grahame's pictures: 6. Saltram House.  A quite large National Trust property, absolutely beautiful.  I used to live fairly near it, so our family went for many walks around the grounds and gardens.

As children, we were shown the 'secret door' in the Library by our guide: I could probably show you the hidden release catch now, if I were there, such was the fun we had finding it.  Grin

Chris from Plymouth.  Wink

My student study city for three and a bit years (or was it four!).
Where I joined my second ship.

.............and anyone who asks for a fillet steak "well done", should be ejected from the establishment in question immediately, whether restaurant or train!  Shocked

As said in the comments a great chef will cook a steak well done even if he dies a little inside.
Prefer ours well done (to potentially get banned by TG for saying such things on a public forum)  Grin
