16  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Wheelchair user forced to drag himself up stairs at Milton Keynes station on: June 20, 2022, 10:38:24
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/wheelchair-user-stranded-platform-years-27268047#

The same story was 'reported' by the Mirror, although they failed to make any effort to establish who actually operates the station, repeatedly stating that 'Avanti West Coast station staff refused to help him.'

17  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Railway union workers industrial and strike action - 2022 on: June 17, 2022, 14:22:36
GWR (Great Western Railway) Revised strike day timetables for the 21st and 23rd are now available to view in the Journey planner/train timetable viewer of your choice.

Does anyone know where I can find PDFs of the strike day timetables?
Sadly GWR don’t believe in producing timetables at times of disruption, engineering work or industrial action and haven’t done so for many years despite at one time being one of the best TOCs (Train Operating Company) for doing so. We are always told to consult journey planners for times of trains.

Every TOC website that I’ve visited that’s affected by next week’s strike action have published revised timetables. Why can’t GWR?

TOCs can plan what services they would like to run next week, but none of them can actually guarantee they will be able to deliver the revised timetable. If no signalers turn up, there won't be any services running! So what is the point of publishing a revised timetable that may ultimately be completely inaccurate. Is it not better to wait until the day and see what happens? The advice across the whole industry is to avoid travelling if possible.
18  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bonaparte's at Bristol Temple Meads on: January 27, 2022, 08:26:31
The whole station is being re-wired. Offices will be temporarily relocated in turn while the works take place. The first area being tackled is the ticket office and offices above. A temporary ticket office will be situated in Bonaparte's.

20  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Plan to scrap printed timetables on: October 27, 2021, 15:07:48
Part of running a proper railway IMHO (in my humble opinion) includes having printed timetables exhibited in poster format at stations, and available on request in pocket sized paper format.
No reliance on apps, electronics, electricity supply, or availability of a phone signal.

A printed paper timetable should mean what it says. Anything electronic will be less reliable and open to doubt and argument as to frequency of updates and what version is being viewed.

Part of running a proper railway includes wasting millions of pounds of taxpayers money printing redundant paper timetables, the majority of which will end up in the bin. Fixed it for you.
21  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: Lack of Common Sense? on: July 19, 2021, 17:41:40
As an aside, why is the explanation for "XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise))" styled as "(Cross Country franchise trains (now run by Arriva))"?

Why not simply "(CrossCountry Trains)" seeing as that's their name?

"Cross Country franchise trains" is pretty poor grammar.

Also "now run by Arriva" implies this is a new development. Arriva have run the franchise since 2007. So why the "now"?!

It bugs me every time I see it.
22  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Temple Meads Station redevelopment on: June 28, 2021, 14:05:37
Just to the right of the '15' sign, the paint has been stripped from one of the support columns. Does anyone have any idea why? Maybe it's to check the condition of the columns?

All of the pillars (along with the rest of the canopy metalwork) are in the process of being stripped back and repainted.
23  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Train operating companies you'll find south and west of London on: June 16, 2021, 16:10:31
Do you include Crossrail under TFL (Transport for London).

Simple answer - yes, I have done.  As part of the Overground; perhaps I should edit the list and add it there.

London Overground and TfL» (Transport for London - about) Rail are separate entities:

24  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: A new livery for all GB trains - what colour d'ya want? on: May 26, 2021, 09:44:45
I think this speculation of a new standard livery is off the mark. I think we are more likely to see individual TOCs (Train Operating Company) retaining their own identities, with the addition of the new GBR (Great British Railways) logo (whatever that might look like), tucked away somewhere discretely.

Much like how the GWR (Great Western Railway) livery has ‘a FirstGroup company’ and CrossCountry has ‘by Arriva’ in fairly small lettering, I think we’ll simply see ‘part of Great British Railways’ added to the corner of existing liveries.

If all the trains and uniforms were branded the same how would anyone know who to complain to?!  Cheesy
25  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: RMT Demands withdrawal of patronising GWR hi vis cleaning vests on: November 30, 2020, 10:17:27
I quite agree you but the union statement seems to be that they have more of an issue with it having GWR (Great Western Railway) on it more than the hero bit.

Perhaps that's because it gives the impression that GWR employ them directly.

Branding should be honest - "Company working on behalf of GWR"  or "Company working in partnership with GWR"

It does, on the front of the vest.
26  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Swans on the loose at Bath train station on: November 22, 2020, 13:32:16
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/bath-swans-train-station-b1759858.html

"The Independent has contacted National Rail for comment on the incident"

I wonder if 'National Rail' will respond?
27  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Pavement Parking to be Banned on: March 13, 2020, 11:26:49
Who's going to enforce it, and how?

Perhaps enforcement could be subcontracted to Northern Rail, they have a proven track record of enforcement and imposing penalties. They are better at this than running trains.

Isn't that 'were'?

Bit too early to say how good the new management (DfT» (Department for Transport - about)'s OLR) are at running trains or enforcing parking regulations.

I stand corrected, perhaps a new company could be started by ex Northern Rail managers who otherwise would be "spending more time with their families" a suitable name cold be devised, how about "northern enforcement"

Surely the ex (Arriva) Northern Rail managers are too busy being new (OLR) Northern Rail managers. As with all franchise changes, it's only the owners who have gone, not the people actually running the show. The managers will no doubt all still be there.

A member of my team was in complete shock when I explained that idea and ideal were two different words with two different meanings. She had gone 56 years believing they were interchangeable.
29  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Temple Meads Station redevelopment on: August 19, 2019, 07:15:39
It's actually a combination of the two - there are quite a few new 'cheese grater' benches too. I don't know why it's taken them so long to install these new benches - the wooden ones have been stacked up in the service tunnel for years. They've also put notices on the new benches, announcing the fact that they've installed new benches. Well yes, we can see that!
