A huge banner promoting an East Huntspill wildlife rescue charity has been hung at Burnham and Highbridge train station.

First Great Western has become the latest company to jump aboard Secret World^s Call of the Wild Appeal to raise cash for a new wildlife hospital and children^s education centre.

Richard Morrish, North Somerset station manager for First Great Western, decided to hang the high visibility banner promoting Secret World to rail passengers passing through Highbridge.

He said: ^After searching for a local animal charity to donate lost property to from stations all over North Somerset, I decided to choose Secret World once I had researched the amazing work they do.^

A site visit to Secret World and a meeting with baby otters, deer and other injured or orphaned wild animals the charity cares for convinced Richard he^d made the right choice.

Vicky Howells, Call of the Wild Appeal Assistant, said: ^We would like to thank First Great Western immensely for their continued support of Secret World Wildlife Rescue. It is companies like this who can make a real difference to us.^

Like it! My wife found a near-dead sparrow chick, which she nursed to maturity. We dropped it off at Secret World when passing, once it had fledged. I think I saw it last week, in a tree.

Not wishing to deprive the charity of much needed funds but bearing in mind the on going discussion in another topic about lost property, I though all items found on the railway or at FGW^▸ (First Great Western) stations were supposed to find their way to Bristol?  The way the article is worded it suggests a local arrangement has been made.

All lost property generally does make its way to Bristol.  However, if said item remains unclaimed for a period of time (think its 6 months but not 100% sure) then said item gets distributed to charities/auctions dependant on what said item is.

Legally, ownership is never transferred, but 6 months is a passage of enough time to be relatively certain that the owner isn't coming back for it. Bristol Airport operate the same way. En route to Dublin pre-Euro days, I found a wallet with 80 Punt and no other items to identify the owner down the back of the seat, whilst fishing for my seat belt. I gave it to the stewardess, who gave it to the dispatcher. I confess that I rang the airport a month later, wondering if the dispatcher had trousered the cash. But no, they are an honest bunch. If unclaimed at 6 months, it goes to charity.

I must say, though, if I had got into the terminal at Dublin and found my wallet and cash missing, I would have at least asked. 80 Punt was then more than ^80. Without a bank card, that must have been someone's entire spending money for a break in Bristol. I'm guessing it was a youth visiting relatives, rather than someone heading to the races.
