As I understand it anything from 7 days up requires one, except for the 3 in 7 or 8 in 15 rover type tickets or surprisingly the All Line Rover tickets - not strictly season tickets but possibly more versitile....

FGW (First Great Western) put up posters saying they were earlier this year, I noticed - so presumably they weren't prior to that?

I always thought that they were, but maybe something changed within the zonal system when Oyster (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services) was introduced?

Rules regarding travelcard seasons keep changing, but for a standard 7 day season you have always needed a photocard. Unlike a monthly season though there is no need to fill out an application form with all your details.
