As I understand it anything from 7 days up requires one, except for the 3 in 7 or 8 in 15 rover type tickets or surprisingly the All Line Rover tickets - not strictly season tickets but possibly more versitile....

FGW▸ (First Great Western) put up posters saying they were earlier this year, I noticed - so presumably they weren't prior to that?

I always thought that they were, but maybe something changed within the zonal system when Oyster▸ (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services) was introduced?

Rules regarding travelcard seasons keep changing, but for a standard 7 day season you have always needed a photocard. Unlike a monthly season though there is no need to fill out an application form with all your details.
