On the Isle of Wight, Island Line services remain suspended for the immediate future as work continues to repair severe track damage in 20 different locations near Ryde caused by flooding on Christmas Eve.

Not a funny situation, but how on earth can you have 20 different locations all near to the same place on a single railway?  When does one location merge into another?

I agree - but they're just printing what's on the National Rail disruptions list:

    Island Line;
Description

    Island Line services are suspended until further notice because of severe flooding in the Ryde area caused by the storms that hit parts of England on the 23 and 24 December. Here is a picture showing some of the damage that has been caused

    There are approximately 20 locations near to Ryde where the land supporting the track has been washed away.

    This current service disruption is expected to last for up to three weeks while repair work is carried out and because of this, the following alterations will apply:

        A shuttle taxi service is replacing trains between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde Pier Head
        A replacement coach service is in operation between Ryde Esplanade and Shanklin.

The Island Line is maintained by the TOC (Train Operating Company), there is no incentive for them to do any major renewals or upgrade the only requirement from the franchise to hand it back in the same condition.

Unless the situation has changed recently major renewals and upgrades remain the responsibility of Network Rail, the train operator conducting more basic maintenance via a sub-contractor.

Thanks for posting, Chris125, and welcome to the Coffee Shop forum.  Smiley

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.
