Travelling Short

Hi All,

I know that you allowed to travel short on an advance, but are you able to with a Std off peak Day Return?

On Friday I went to a ticket counter and asked for a Off peak return between A and B expecting to pay ^18.20 the ticket seller said hang on and looked for a cheaper ticket at ^14.20 which was from another station that you changed at A.

Don't want to say where from at moment because

A If its not right he/she might get in trouble

B If its a Fare anomaly could it be fixed .

I think you meant that you are not allowed to travel short on an advance ticket.

You can break your journey on an off peak ticket, so he was indeed being very helpful.

Yes sorry that's what I was meaning to say.

He was very helpful that's why I prefer to use a person not a machine.

I take it that this is a anomaly where the is potential savings to be made on certain fares including singles.

So that I am certain a Journey can be started at another station ?

I believe there are a few cases where breaking a journey is not permitted, to avoid fare abstraction (I think this used to be the case at Newcastle, where a ticket from Berwick to London was significantly cheaper than an anytime return from Newcastle. Not sure whether that's still the case though.) But you can be fairly sure if someone has sold you a ticket that it is safe to do.

Break of Journey and/or starting/ending short is always permitted on Anytime Single/Return tickets, and always permitted on the return portion of all other walk-up ticket types (Off Peak/Super Off Peak, Off Peak/Super Off Peak Day, Off Peak/Super Off Peak Day Travelcard).

There are some flows where Break of Journey is not permitted on the Single or the outward portion of the various Off Peak/Super Off Peak ticket types.

There isused to be a case of where a ticket on FCC^▸ from, say, Letchworth to Kings Cross was cheaper then Letchworth to Finsbury Park (and by a significant amount). It was when the Super Off Peak's (Weekend Only) were first introduced. I cant remember what the BoJ^▸ rules were then. Ticket restriction code is now nationalrail.co.uk/FB

This resulted in huge numbers of, (an unspecified football team), buying tickets to Kings Cross and getting off at Finsbury Park.
FCC inspectors reported huge numbers of these people for travelling short.

As far as im aware, BoJ is not permitted on Advance tickets (other then to change trains) and is permitted on most other tickets unless clearly stated in the ticket restrictions.
