The newspaper comment sections seem to bring out a wild (yes, wild not wide) variety of contributors.

Surmising from the information in the article and the geography of the railway, the vehicle ran away for several miles, dropping considerably in height ... which is why it looks to be in rather a mess to put it mildly.

It looks to have got more than halfway around the mountain section - probably a kilometre or so and a drop at that point of about 100m. Usual practice that I observed on this right-hand running railway was to stop the incoming service short of the summit headshunt - with its peculiar triangular slide-rail point to await the departure of the preceding down train. I can imagine that an improperly set hand brake and a strong gust of wind - not unknown phenomenon at the top of the mountain - would see it roll, and the gradient starts immediately. I think that there is no Fell rail on the up line on the mountain section after Bungalow. If there had been, it would have got much further and with considerably more energy. Shame to see such a beautiful vehicle totally wrecked.

I foresee a change to the primitive layout at the summit to include an arriving catch point.
