The Severn Beach Line service is currently terminating at Clifton and turning back after the 0836 from Avonmouth to Bristol Temple Meads hit a boulder at Horseshoe Bend between Shirehampton and Sea Mills. The train crew were able to remove the boulder from the track and continue, but the line was subsequently closed so that an inspection could be carried out.

As of 1100 there is concern from a Network Rail earthworks examiner about another boulder on the embankment. The line in this area runs along the side of a steep bank next to the River Avon.

From FGW (First Great Western):

Quote
Cancellations to services between Clifton Down and Severn Beach

Due to an obstruction on the line between Clifton Down and Severn Beach all lines are blocked.

Impact:

Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled. Disruption is expected until 11:00 29/07.

Customer Advice:

Owing to a boulder falling from an embankment we are unable to run a train service between Clifton Down and Severn Beach. Network Rail staff are on site and carrying out an inspection of the embankment.

South Gloucester Bus & Coach are running coaches between Clifton Down and Severn Beach, these may not be at published train times. Please check station signage for the location of the rail replacement pick up stop.

Customers may also use the following First Bus routes:

First Bus routes 1, 2: Bristol (Temple Meads Stop TJ) - Clifton Down (Station), First Bus routes 8, 9: Bristol (Temple Meads Stop TA) - Clifton Down (Station) - Redland (Station), First Bus route 40: Bristol (Centre) - Clifton Down (Station) - Sea Mills (Square) - Shirehampton (The Green) and First Bus route 41: Bristol (Centre) - Clifton Down (Station) - Sea Mills (Sunny Hill) - Shirehampton (The Green) - Avonmouth are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

Noting they're now saying "until 11:00 on 29th" i.e. tomorrow.

Is it practical to run Bristol to Sea Mills and Bristol to Severn Beach via Henbury and a reversal at Avonmouth?

Line reopened at 1200.

Last inspection of the earthworks in the area was November 2013. Does anyone know if that is an unduly long time?

Technically possible had it been necessary, but problematical finding pilots for the freight only section. It would have been far easier to continue the ticket acceptance on local buses.

Like some sort of loop, only incomplete?  Grin

Time would not be of the essence. I have been that way from Patchway once, during the 2-week possession for Abbey Wood. It added almost an hour to the journey, which would have bothered me had I not gone specially for the ride.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
