Newport Station was upgraded prior to the 2010 Ryder Cup and now (according to Kent Onine ) Sandwich is to be upgraded for the 2020 Open.

Quote
A £4.3 million upgrade to make Sandwich Railway Station more accessible for The Open 2020 will begin in November.

Network Rail has confirmed the start date of the platform extension improvements which which will take about five months to complete.

The works will enhance capacity at the station ahead of the 149th championship hosted by Royal St George’s Golf Club.

Which stations should be selected as the railheads for future golf competitions in order to get refurbishment?

Oxford, as this might be the only way we could get it upgraded any time soon  Cheesy Cheesy
Although not sure where the golf could be played, although I am sure some of the colleges could lend some land Smiley

I had forgotten that and I have been there. It is good fun but is an expensive way to play crazy golf.

Ashley Heath Halt, on a reinstated line from Brockenhurst Via Ringwood, for Moors Valley 18 hole golf course, with nearby miniture railway.
Guess it would in fact go to Ferndown, for a turnback.
This has is fact had some money spent on it as a feasability study, to Ringwood at least, as there a large field is availible next to the A31, near the old course of the railway, for Ringwood Park and ride, to relive presure on Southampton Airport Parkway.

Out of area, but Longcross would be an obvious case. The gate on the Wentworth side is firmly barracaded, obviously don't want the riff-raff.

Copnor, a suburb in Portsmouth between Hilsea and Fratton, was originally meant to have a station. It had a signalled level crossing (later replaced by a bridge), and a Station Road laid out, but construction never began.

Great Salterns Golf Course is just a little way down the road.

This thread raises a thought in my mind. How many golf courses are adjacent to rail lines (I can think of some and assume the answer is quite a few) and if so, are stray golf balls mishit off the fairway a danger to trains?

If Stockley Park were to host the competition then both Hayes & Harlington and West Drayton could get refurbished.
