To highlight the ridiculous size of the paper roll tickets, here is a comparison image of a modern paper roll ticket (noticeably faded) alongside an older 'Sportis' paper ticket and the standard card ticket.

I was issued with one of those tickets on a recent Journey on the Tarka▸ (Branch line from Barnstaple to Exeter) line.  The paper may be large, but I would much rather carry that ticket machine than one of the old (very heavy) Sportis machines.
