Opened today: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-foyle-west-50122093

Quote
Londonderry's new £27m railway station has opened to the public.

The regional transport hub is located on the site of the city's former Victorian railway station.

The listed building closed in 1980 but was chosen as the site for the new station following a public consultation.

Translink say the hub creates a 21st Century transport centre which it is hoped will encourage commuters to shift to public transport.

The hub will improve co-ordination between rail and local and cross-border bus services and provide a greenway link to the city centre via the Peace Bridge, Translink added.

Impressive, but how does the existing passenger usage (Belfast to Derry/Londonderry) compare with some of our lines, which wouldn't get the same amount of money.

I don't think that you can base investment purely on existing passenger usage.  It's certainly a factor, but only that.  My understanding is that the line into (London)Derry got reduced to the thinnest possible rail link quite some time back but that service (and presumably) passenger numbers are on the up.  Earlier this month, the whole section from Colraine into Derry was bustituted while the line was upgraded;  all this work and expenditure based on planned leaps in passenger numbers which, if it's all joined up, will come.

The work we did in Melksham at the start of this decade, which has lead to the the dramatic rise in use of the line, was not purely based on existing passenger numbers. Industry models taking the old average of 1 person off and 1 person on to each train -  8 passengers a day, 4 trains , and scaling it, made even the funding of the trial service look to be an absurd waste.   For sure, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and London and the South East all - each for their own reason - tend to get heavier investment but I think it's probably right to be upgrading the main line and stations from Belfast.   Perhaps we should inspire our Sub National Transport bodies to follow the leads of these areas?

There's a FOI (Freedom of Information) document giving NIR usage.

L/Derry (sic) comes 16th in 54 stations in 17/18 with a customer footfall of 449 661.

Its urban population is given as 93 512.

I imagine that little of the cost was railway related.

The rail journey to Belfast takes a bit longer than the coach at present, although both are ultimately under Translink and charge the same basic fare.

OTC, the FoI figures are interesting. Given the Irish governments contribution to the project you wonder how many of that c. half million are from Donegal. Might be interesting after you know what.

Especially if one considers the present rail offering of 62 miles in 117 minutes (to Central) with 9 stops. There's probably not the stock for some extra, fast workings.
