Birmingham’s famous Frankfurt Christmas market returns this week and passengers are being urged to 'think in threes' when planning their journeys with record numbers expected to travel in and out of the city by train.

The market opens on Thursday (7 November) and Network Rail is advising rail travellers to plan ahead for the smoothest journey possible.

Millions of people are expected to visit Birmingham for the market until 23 December, with many using the railway to enjoy the city's festive events and attractions.

Network Rail’s top three travel tips are:

* Plan your journey
* Check before you travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk 
* Know the times of your trains home

Perhaps I'm too much of a seasoned travelled - these things (or the equivalent) feel like second nature to me.  And not just at Christmas, not just for Birmingham!

"Think in threes" is a poor stapline.  Surely they could be more creative?

Navigate ... to www.nationalrail.co.uk to plan your journey
Organise ... yourself by keeping up to date and check your journey before travelling
Enjoy ... yourself but don't overdo the mulled wine
Learn ... the times of your train home - especially the last departure.
