A train has been running from Southampton MCT to Weymouth thence two return runs to Yeovil Pen Mill before returning to Southampton. It has operated Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only.
Has anyone any knowledge about this?

Whichever of these it is (the chances are that it will have been one or the other), both of these have regular schedules. I travelled up from Pinhoe to Basingstoke today and passed a weedkiller train at Gillingham. Checking RTT» (Real Time Trains - website), I noticed that it had run on Monday and Tuesday as well.

The schedules are for light locomotives running as route learner/refresher trips for Freightliner drivers ready for upcoming engineering work on the Yeovil to Dorchester line. Even though the data has been 'scrambled' for RTT» (Real Time Trains - website), the four digit train identity beginning with a zero denotes a light locomotive. The eight digit TSC code is for Freightliner.

I passed said service at Yeovil PM on Monday. I can definitely confirm it is a Freightliner "light" locomotive!

I think for future reference the Wessex rail head treatment trains in this area, Hants/Dorset etc, mainly run from Totton Yard nowadays, they are typically Q paths valid for the whole timetable period - so the same paths can be used for other purposes such as de-icing, weed killing or track inspections.

Here’s a Totton to Totton service from the 29th that might be what was noted by PhilWakely yesterday:

It could be route knowledge run, Network Rail uses FoC on it engineering trains which can include RHTT▸ (Rail Head Treatment Train), weed killing, trackwork engineering trains
