Twenty-thousand signatures have been collected on a petition opposing the multi-million-pound regeneration of the Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare (link below.)

Henry Boot Developments has submitted a ^30 million scheme to North Somerset Council to inject a fresh lease of life into the derelict seafront site.

It includes a water park on four levels, a six-lane 25-metre swimming pool, a 96-bed hotel, restaurant, eight-screen cinema and a 20-lane bowling alley.

But residents and visitors to the resort who just want to see it reinstated as a pool are campaigning against the scheme.

The Tropicana Regeneration and Development Association (TRADA) is a charitable trust aimed at taking on the pool's redevelopment.

TRADA chairman Dick Whittington has been collecting the petition signatures since 2005 and now says he has 20,000 names, 18,000 of them in the past eight months.

The water park would be run by Splashdown, owners of the Splashdown water park in Poole and there would be an open-top solarium on the top level.

Henry Boot is in negotiations with operators for approximately 60 per cent of the area available.
